Features & Specs

  1. Batch Conversion

Convert hundreds of files at once with per-type group defaults and individual overrides.

  2. Modern image formats

First-class support for HEIC, AVIF and WebP — encode and decode, both ways. Read JPEG XL and a dozen more modern formats too.

  3. Drag & Drop Interface

Drop files anywhere on the window. Native, instant, and exactly what you’d expect on a Mac.

  4. File Quality

Dial in compression, resolution and bitrate. Keep originals pristine or shrink for sharing.

  5. Renaming

Never overwrite a file by accident. Convertessa appends safe suffixes automatically.

  6. Conversion History

Every job is logged locally. Re-run a previous conversion or revisit recent outputs in a click.

  7. Archiving

Bundle your converted files straight into a single ZIP, TAR or 7z — packaged and ready to share the moment a job finishes.

  8. Convert from Finder

Right-click any file in Finder and choose Convert. A Quick Action handles it on the spot — no need to open the app first.

  9. Compact Mode

Shrink Convertessa to a tidy mini window that tucks into a corner — just a drop zone and a format picker for quick, one-off conversions.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Convertessa.app.
  1. What makes Convertessa.app unique?

Convertessa is a native macOS file converter that does all its work on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded, and you don't need an account or an internet connection. It covers 1100+ conversion combinations across images, audio, video, documents, archives and eBooks, all in one app. Behind the scenes it runs trusted open-source engines through a single native interface. It also has a command-line tool that uses the same engine, plus right-click conversion in Finder.

  2. Why should a person choose Convertessa.app over its competitors?

    • Private by design: online converters like CloudConvert, Convertio, Zamzar and FreeConvert upload your files to their servers. Convertessa never does, and it has no telemetry or analytics.
    • One app for everything: HandBrake only does video, XnConvert only does images and iMazing only does HEIC. Convertessa covers every major file type.
    • Fair price: $19 once, with a lifetime license and lifetime updates, on all your own Macs. Convertio and Movavi charge subscriptions.
    • A real Mac app: built for Apple Silicon and Intel, not a web wrapper or Electron. It includes batch drag-and-drop, quality controls, Finder integration and a CLI for automation.
  3. How would you describe the primary audience of Convertessa.app?

Mac users who convert files often and care about where their files go. That includes: - Privacy-conscious people handling sensitive or confidential documents and photos - People fed up with ad-filled "convert X to Y" websites - Photographers and content creators who batch-convert, for example HEIC to JPG, or video to video - Developers and power users who want to script conversions from the terminal

  4. What's the story behind Convertessa.app?

A close friend of mine, who works as a photographer and videographer, once asked me to upload some of his videos to YouTube. He sent me the RAW files, and each one was around 40–60 GB.

With my internet speed, uploading them to an online converter would have taken forever. So I thought, why not build a simple tool to convert them locally?

That’s how Convertessa started. I built it for that one problem, but it turned out to be useful enough that I now use it myself almost every day.

  5. Which are the primary technologies used for building Convertessa.app?

App: Swift and SwiftUI with AppKit. Conversion engines: FFmpeg, Pandoc, libvips, LibreOffice, Calibre, fontTools.
