Xpra features and specs

  • Remote Desktop Access
Xpra allows users to access remote applications and desktops, enabling users to run applications on a remote server while displaying them on a local machine.
  • Seamless Window Mode
Unlike other remote desktop solutions, Xpra supports a seamless mode, where individual windows of remote applications can be run on a local desktop as if they were local applications.
  • Cross-Platform Compatibility
Xpra can be used on a variety of operating systems including Linux, Windows, and macOS, providing flexibility for diverse user environments.
  • Efficient Bandwidth Usage
Xpra is designed to be efficient on bandwidth usage by sending data only when necessary, which makes it suitable for use over less reliable connections.
  • Open Source
Being open-source, Xpra allows users to modify, inspect, and enhance the source code, fostering transparency and community collaboration.

Possible disadvantages of Xpra

  • Complex Setup
Xpra can be complex to set up, especially for those with limited technical expertise, due to its extensive configuration options and dependencies.
  • Performance Limitations
While Xpra is efficient in bandwidth, it might not perform as well as some proprietary solutions in terms of graphical throughput or latency, particularly in demanding applications.
  • Limited Features Compared to Alternatives
Some users may find that Xpra lacks certain features found in commercial alternatives such as TeamViewer or AnyDesk, especially for more integrated remote management functionalities.
  • Security Concerns
Although Xpra supports encryption, improper configuration can lead to security vulnerabilities, requiring careful setup to ensure data is protected.
  • Inconsistent Support
Being an open-source project, Xpra may not offer the same level of support or documentation as commercial software, which could be challenging for troubleshooting.

Gitmore.io features and specs

  • Profile Enhancement Suggestions
The tool provides actionable suggestions for improving README files, repository descriptions, and overall profile presentation to help developers stand out.
  • Time-Saving
Rather than manually researching best practices for GitHub profiles, Gitmore.io automates the analysis process, saving developers time they can spend on actual coding.

Possible disadvantages of Gitmore.io

  • Limited Public Information
As a relatively niche tool, there is limited public information, reviews, and community feedback available about Gitmore.io, making it harder to evaluate its effectiveness before committing.
  • Dependency on AI Accuracy
The quality of suggestions depends on the AI's ability to accurately assess what makes a GitHub profile effective, which may not always align with individual goals or industry-specific expectations.
  • Narrow Scope
The tool focuses specifically on GitHub profile optimization, which is only one small aspect of a developer's overall online presence and career development strategy.
  • Privacy Concerns
Users may need to grant access to their GitHub data, which could raise privacy concerns about how that information is stored, processed, and potentially shared.
  • Uncertain Long-Term Value
Profile optimization is often a one-time or infrequent task, which raises questions about the ongoing value and utility of the platform after initial improvements have been made.

  • Cool but Obscure X11 Apps
One of my favorite bits of software is Xpra [0], "screen for X". You'd run it and it would start another X server (start apps in it with `DISPLAY=:1 xterm` or whatever), and you would "attach" it to your running X server with `xpra attach`. You can attach to e.g. `ssh://hostname/:1`, so I ran a firefox instance on a homelab server and attached to it from my laptop and my desktop to not have to bother keeping... - Source: Hacker News / about 3 years ago
  • Alternatives To X2go?
Iโ€™ve used Xpra in the past to connect to a remote system for GUI stuff, but I almost exclusively use ssh because most of the time I donโ€™t need to run a remote windowing system. Source: over 3 years ago
  • I want to (securely) remotely access my Pop!_OS desktop from my Pop!_OS laptop - whatโ€™s the best way to do this in 2023?
To add to this if you need to access graphical applications of an entire desktop environment you can use Xpra or MOONLIGHT (I suggest the second one if you want to game on the remote desktop or need very low latency in general), you can use both of these through a ssh tunnel (you need to enable this and X forwarding in the config) so if you setup and allow access to ssh correctly you can also use these without too... If you're a founder who doesn't code, you probably rely on engineers to tell you what's shipping.
