WorkbookDiff is a free browser-local tool for comparing two coordinate-aligned .xlsx workbook versions up to 20 MiB each. It reports supported changes in values, stored formula expressions, worksheet presence and visibility, hidden rows and columns, and used ranges. Findings can be searched, filtered, and exported to CSV. It does not support .xls, .xlsm, .xlsb, password-protected workbooks, row-reordered reconciliation, formatting, charts, pivot tables, macros, or formula recalculation. The CSV is a comparison report, not a complete audit trail.

Analysis of Xltrail

Overall verdict

  • Xltrail is a solid, purpose-built version control solution for Excel workbooks that fills a genuine gap, since traditional tools like Git struggle to track meaningful changes inside binary spreadsheet files. It's well-regarded for teams that depend heavily on Excel and need auditability and change tracking.

Why this product is good

  • Provides cell-level and VBA code diffing that shows meaningful changes rather than treating spreadsheets as opaque binary files
  • Brings proper version control, history, and audit trails to Excel workbooks, which is otherwise difficult with standard tools
  • Helps teams collaborate on shared spreadsheets while reducing errors and conflicting edits
  • Integrates with Git and supports tracking of formulas, worksheets, and macros
  • Useful for compliance and governance where spreadsheet changes must be documented

Recommended for

  • Finance, accounting, and analytics teams that rely heavily on complex Excel models
  • Organizations needing audit trails and compliance for spreadsheet-based processes
  • Developers and analysts maintaining VBA macros or shared workbooks
  • Teams that want Git-style version control tailored to Excel files
  • Businesses looking to reduce spreadsheet errors and improve collaboration
