Analysis of UseFirsthand

Overall verdict

  • UseFirsthand appears to be a niche or emerging platform, and there isn't enough verified, widely-available public information to confidently assess its quality, reliability, or overall value at this time.

Why this product is good

  • Limited publicly available reviews or third-party coverage make it difficult to verify claims about performance and reliability
  • As a newer or lesser-known tool, its feature set and pricing may still be evolving, which can be a plus for early adopters but a risk for those needing established, well-documented software
  • Without extensive user feedback, it's hard to gauge customer support quality, uptime, and long-term stability
  • Specific use cases and integrations may be narrow or specialized, meaning it might excel for particular workflows but lack broader applicability

Recommended for

  • Early adopters willing to test emerging tools and provide feedback
  • Users with very specific or niche needs that mainstream tools don't address
  • Teams comfortable with limited documentation and community support while a product matures
  • Those who prioritize experimentation over proven track records

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing VS Code and UseFirsthand.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

UseFirsthand's answer:

G2 and Capterra aggregate crowd reviews. They don't test anything themselves, and vendors pay for placement. FirstHand works the other way: every score comes from a structured methodology run by human testers, not algorithms fed by vendor-submitted data. If you want to know what a tool actually costs at scale, whether the API holds under load, or what users complain about on forums, you won't find that on G2. You will here.

What's the story behind your product?

UseFirsthand's answer:

Every SaaS comparison site we used turned out to be an affiliate funnel, rankings driven by commission rates, not product quality. So we built what we wished existed: a platform that opens the software, breaks it, reads the complaints on Reddit and Twitter, models the real cost at scale, and publishes the full methodology so anyone can audit the scoring. No sponsored placements, no paid reviews, no fluff.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

UseFirsthand's answer:

  • SMB owners and founders (1โ€“50 employees) evaluating SaaS for invoicing, CRM, helpdesk, expense management or payroll โ€” categories where a bad pick is expensive to reverse.
  • Operations and finance managers who need honest cost-at-scale data before signing anything.
  • Freelancers and sole traders in France navigating e-invoicing reform and URSSAF compliance, who need tools that actually meet the rules.
  • Anyone who's been burned by affiliate-driven comparison sites and wants a second opinion they can actually trust.

What makes your product unique?

UseFirsthand's answer:

  • Real hands-on testing โ€” we open accounts, stress-test tools under actual workloads, and write down what breaks. No demo screenshots, no vendor copy-paste.
  • 6-point autopsy framework applied to every tool: crash test, API audit, security & infrastructure review, cost-at-scale simulation, 4-hour UX stress session, and a 90-day Twitter/X + forum scan for real user complaints.
  • Zero pay-to-rank โ€” vendors cannot buy a better position. Scoring weights are public and identical for every tool in a category.
  • Transparent scoring levels โ€” every review is labelled either "deep analysis" (sourced reviews, forums, videos) or "hands-on tested" (real account, dated logs), so readers know exactly how a score was produced.
  • Hidden cost simulation โ€” we model the real invoice at 1, 10, 50 and 100 users, including upsells and post-promo price hikes that other review platforms never surface.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

UseFirsthand's answer:

Next.js, Supabase, Vercel, TypeScript.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

UseFirsthand's answer:

FirstHand is a free review platform, our users are individual buyers, not enterprise clients. Mostly SMB owners, freelancers and ops managers in France evaluating SaaS before they buy.

For IDE-heavy teams, BYOK (bring your own key) can be interesting, no matter whether you live in WebStorm or VS Code. Option 1: Raw editing in IDE. You open the .md file in VS Code or whatever you use. Syntax highlighting shows you the structure. Maybe you toggle a preview pane. This works for quick edits but becomes painful for anything involving tables, diagrams, or complex formatting. - Source: dev.to / about 2 months ago
