While extensible, it may lack some advanced features found in dedicated IDEs out of the box.
  • Extension Management
Managing and configuring a large number of extensions can become cumbersome and sometimes lead to performance issues.
  • Learning Curve
Although user-friendly, it has a steeper learning curve for beginners due to its numerous features and customization options.
  • Memory Usage
Despite being lightweight, it can consume a significant amount of memory when multiple extensions are installed.

  • Telemetry
By default, VS Code collects usage data, which might be a concern for users sensitive about data privacy. However, this can be disabled.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing VS Code and ChaiBuilder.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

ChaiBuilder's answer:

We have few active customers for all the product and services.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

ChaiBuilder's answer:

With a hosted builder, your content lives in the vendor's database and your site runs on their platform. Leaving means an export, a rebuild, or both. With ChaiBuilder the site is already yours — your server, your database, your code — so there's nothing to migrate off.

The pricing works the same way. It's a perpetual licence with a version window of updates, billed annually, not a subscription your site stops working without. And you're not paying per feature: the $99 Solo plan has the same capabilities as the $899 Agency plan.

Where it genuinely doesn't fit: if you want someone else to handle hosting, backups and uptime, a hosted platform is the right call. ChaiBuilder assumes you'd rather run it yourself.

What makes your product unique?

ChaiBuilder's answer:

ChaiBuilder runs inside your own Next.js application rather than on our servers. You deploy it to your own infrastructure, and every page, user and form submission lives in your own Postgres or SQLite database. We never hold a copy of your content — if ChaiBuilder disappeared tomorrow, your site keeps running.

Two things follow from that which most visual builders can't offer. First, it's low-code, not no-code: your own React components register as blocks, so the builder extends in code instead of becoming a wall you have to escape. Second, every plan includes every feature. There's no tier where roles, revision history or multi-tenancy sit behind an upgrade — plans differ only in how many production domains you run and whether the builder carries our branding or yours.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

ChaiBuilder's answer:

Agencies and studios building client sites, who want to ship under their own brand, hand the client something the client actually owns, and keep a flat cost per site instead of a per-client subscription that eats the margin.

Development teams working in Next.js who need non-technical colleagues to publish pages without an engineering ticket for every copy change — but who aren't willing to give up their codebase, their components or their database to get it.

Beyond those, startups treating the site as an asset rather than a recurring bill, and organisations running multi-tenant white-label deployments where data isolation has to be architectural, not a setting.

What's the story behind your product?

ChaiBuilder's answer:

Every visual website builder works well right up to the point where it doesn't. You need one component the block library doesn't have, or a client asks where their data actually lives, or the feature you need turns out to be two tiers up. Past that point the builder stops being a tool and becomes something you work around.

ChaiBuilder was built on the view that the wall is a design choice, not a technical limit. It runs inside a Next.js app with Payload CMS, on infrastructure you control, with the code as a deliberate escape hatch rather than an admission of failure. Non-technical editors get a real visual editor; developers keep their components, their routing and their database.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

ChaiBuilder's answer:

ChaiBuilder is built on React and Next.js, with Payload CMS handling content modelling and the admin layer. Styling and the theme system are built on Tailwind, using design tokens so developers define the system once and editors work inside it.

Data lives in Postgres or SQLite — your choice, your instance. It's TypeScript throughout, deploys anywhere Node runs, and the scaffold is a single command: npx chaibuilder-app create.
