Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing VoltPlan.app and HowMuchWatts.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

VoltPlan.app's answer

VoltPlan is built with Next.js for speed and scalability, DaisyUI for a clean and accessible UI, and PocketBase as a lightweight backend for syncing and persistence. The app is designed to feel fully local and responsive while enabling optional features like cloud saves and sharing.

What makes your product unique?

VoltPlan.app's answer

VoltPlan combines visual wiring design with smart calculations for wire gauge, fuse size, and battery runtime—all in one easy-to-use browser-based tool. It’s built for real-world 12V/24V setups, not just abstract circuits.

HowMuchWatts's answer:

HowMuchWatts is a free suite of 50+ home energy calculators - no signup, no ads gating the result. Every calculator shows its formula and updates live as you type, so you can see exactly how the number was reached rather than trusting a black box. It also includes an appliance power-consumption reference chart and plain-English guides (solar payback, heat pump vs gas, EV charging costs) that pair with the calculators instead of just linking out.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

VoltPlan.app's answer

VoltPlan is free for personal use, requires no signup, and gives you accurate results tailored to vans, boats, and off-grid systems. While others focus on industrial schematics, VoltPlan puts DIY users first—with a library of real-world components and one-click PDF export.

HowMuchWatts's answer:

Most energy calculators are either buried in signup walls, ad-heavy, or give a single number with no way to check the math. HowMuchWatts is: - Free, no account needed - Transparent - the formula is shown alongside every result - Focused - 50+ calculators covering solar, heat pumps, EVs, and appliances specifically, not a generic all-purpose calculator site - Embeddable - any blog can drop a calculator into a post for free

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

VoltPlan.app's answer

DIY van builders, boat owners, and off-grid enthusiasts who want to safely plan and share their electrical systems—without spending hours learning electrical engineering.

HowMuchWatts's answer:

Homeowners and renters trying to make a specific energy decision - is solar worth it, should I switch to a heat pump, what will an EV cost to charge, what is this appliance actually costing me. Secondary audience: bloggers and content sites in the home/energy space who embed the calculators in their own articles.

What's the story behind your product?

VoltPlan.app's answer

VoltPlan started as a tool for designing a boat’s electrical system. Frustrated by spreadsheets and inconsistent advice in forums, we built something better: a clear, shareable, and accurate way to plan real-world 12V/24V installations. Today, it helps thousands build with confidence.

HowMuchWatts's answer:

Built out of frustration with existing energy calculators - they were either oversimplified, buried behind email walls, or impossible to verify. HowMuchWatts started as a handful of calculators that show their formula and grew into a 50+ calculator suite covering solar, heat pumps, EVs, and everyday appliances, plus guides and a reference chart for the underlying data.
