Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Vim and RiverScript.

What's the story behind your product?

RiverScript's answer:

I'm Lex, an AI developer from Finland.

The idea for RiverScript came from my wife. She is a student. One day she asked me if it would be possible to build an app that lets you record, for example, a three-hour webinar and get a full AI-generated transcript without any extra steps. All in one application โ€“ no separate screen recorders, no downloading video or audio files, no switching between browser tabs. The entire workflow in one place.

That's how RiverScript was born.

Record any audio from your screen. Get the text.

Born from real needs. Built by software engineers. No marketers were involved or harmed during the process.

And yes, it works on both Windows and macOS. It doesn't matter whether you're recording audio from a browser, a meeting app, or any other application โ€“ RiverScript works everywhere because it captures the system audio directly.

Your audio. Your rules.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

RiverScript's answer:

RiverScript was built for real people โ€“ students, content creators, and professionals like journalists, lawyers, and healthcare workers.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

RiverScript's answer:

RiverScript uses its own technologies to combine the best transcription models on the market โ€” synchronized models such as the Standard Sync Model (OpenAI Whisper v3 + Deepgram Nova-2) and the Premium Sync Model (ElevenLabs Scribe v2 + Deepgram Nova-3). We also use our own algorithms for processing and filtering audio and text, which improve the final quality of the transcripts.

What makes your product unique?

RiverScript's answer:

Live Recording Transcription from RiverScript is a new convenient workflow for transcribing everything the user can hear on their computer. No more downloading files, no integrations into conferencing programs, and no need to install special bots. Now you can simply record and turn into text any video or audio on devices running Windows and macOS. All in one place, in one program, with literally just a couple of clicks.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

RiverScript's answer:

Unlike previously existing transcription solutions such as TurboScribe, RiverScript offers a unique Live Recording Transcription feature. It allows users to capture and record all system audio, then automatically convert it into text. Record any audio from your screen. Get the text. No more meeting bots, permissions or integrations. Your audio. Your rules. In addition, RiverScript features a lightning-fast desktop built in Rust, allowing it to process audio and video files up to 50 GB in size and 8 hours in length.

  • regular Vim has lua?!
Lua is quite small, encouraging distros to include it. The ubuntu gvim has, and the gvim AppImage linked from vim.org does. The default Makefile from github is set up to not include it, but you can uncomment one line there to get it. Source: over 3 years ago
  • is there a way to make highlighted text persistent after quit when using something like [match Search /\%'.line('.').'l/] ?
I've not used vimwiki locally (tho I'm old enough to remember the Vim wiki on vim.org :), but I think what you are wanting to do is extend vimwiki's syntax file. I presume it installs one at $VIMRUNTIM/syntax or or ~/.vim/syntax. If this sounds right, then create a ~/.vim/after/syntax/vimwiki.vim file and place your match command in there. Then everytime you open a vimwiki file it should apply your... Source: over 3 years ago
  • vim.org - Is there a reason for this 1800s-esque design?
Vim.org has 242k total visitors, tailwindcss.com has 4.4m, planetscale.com has 412k, jpl.nasa.gov has 2.6m, all built with Tailwind, all several years younger than Vim's website. Unnecessary comparison, unnecessary defence. It's a valuable tool, fine, but a complete disregard for anyone who doesn't love a crappy website and would like to navigate a website like a normal human is not something to be defended. Maybe... • What is YOUR process of writing ?
I write in Vim with some customizations in my vimrc to gear it more towards prose writing than code editing. It's not pretty, but Normal Mode and Ex commands are the most powerful text editing tools out there, so that means I spend less time on making corrections and other edits. Source: over 4 years ago
