Possible disadvantages

  • Steep Learning Curve

  • Minimal Default Config
The default configuration of Vim is quite minimalistic, which may necessitate additional setup and customization to meet modern development needs.
  • Limited GUI
Vim primarily operates in a terminal, and while there are graphical variants like GVim, they are not as feature-rich or user-friendly as modern GUI editors.
  • Plugin Management
While Vim is highly extensible, managing and configuring plugins can be cumbersome compared to more modern editors that offer integrated plugin management.
  • Inconsistent Behavior Across Platforms
There may be inconsistencies in behavior or available features of Vim across different operating systems, which can complicate its use in certain environments.

  • Targeted Use Case Efficiency
By focusing on a specific workflow (courier/delivery of frames), the tool can optimize performance and reliability for that particular task better than more generalized alternatives.
  • Potentially Lower Cost
Smaller, specialized SaaS products often have more competitive pricing compared to larger enterprise platforms, making them accessible for individuals or small teams.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Vim and FrameCourier.

What makes your product unique?

FrameCourier's answer:

FrameCourier replaces the usual 3-tool stack (Frame.io + Dropbox + a photo proofing app) with one platform — and unlike competitors, every plan (including the free 3GB tier) includes every feature and unlimited team members/clients, priced by storage instead of per-seat. It combines photo galleries (RAW/PSD support, watermarking, client proofing, AI-generated slideshows) with structured video review (timestamped comments, revision rounds, version approval) under one login. It's also the only tool in the space with Ask Milo, an AI assistant grounded in a video's transcript, visuals, and comment threads that answers questions about footage instantly instead of making you re-watch it — plus AI search across photos, videos, and transcripts. It was built by a working production studio (WeDoVids) dogfooding it on real client deliveries since 2018, not designed in the abstract.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

FrameCourier's answer:

FrameCourier is built for small-to-midsize commercial photography and video production studios — the kind of team that delivers finished work directly to clients and needs one branded portal to do it, rather than an enterprise media-asset system. That includes wedding and portrait photographers, commercial/product photographers, real estate shooters, video production companies, and hybrid studios that shoot both stills and video for the same clients.

The common thread is studios currently stitching together separate tools — a gallery/proofing app for photos, Frame.io or similar for video review, Dropbox for transfers — and paying per-seat as they add team members or give clients' stakeholders (an art director, producer, or outside agency) their own login. FrameCourier fits studios anywhere from solo freelancers on the free tier to growing teams who've outgrown per-seat pricing but don't need (or want to pay for) enterprise-scale media management.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

FrameCourier's answer:

Price and seats. Studios typically pay for two or three tools — Pixieset or Pic-Time for galleries, a 5-seat Frame.io plan for video review, Dropbox for transfers — and the video tool's bill climbs every time they add a team member or bring in a client's art director. A 5-seat Frame.io Team plan alone runs $125/month. FrameCourier replaces all of it for $49/month with unlimited team members and unlimited clients, on every plan, including a free 3GB tier — priced by storage, not by who logs in.

Feature gating. Competitors reserve their best features (branding, watermarking, advanced proofing, etc.) for top-tier plans. Every FrameCourier plan gets every feature, free tier included.

One login instead of three. Photo galleries and video review live in the same branded portal, so clients aren't juggling separate tools and passwords for stills vs. footage.

AI that competitors don't have. Ask Milo answers questions about a video's content — grounded in its transcript, visuals, and comment thread — instead of making someone re-watch footage to find a detail. Combined with AI search across photos, videos, and transcripts, it's a level of findability nothing else in this space offers.

Built by people who use it. FrameCourier isn't a tool designed for a hypothetical market — it's the internal system a working production studio (WeDoVids) built to replace its own Frame.io/Dropbox/proofing-tool stack in 2018, refined across thousands of real client deliveries before ever being sold.

What's the story behind your product?

FrameCourier's answer:

FrameCourier started as an internal tool, not a product idea. Brian Shaffer, a developer since the early 1990s, co-runs WeDoVids, a video production and photography studio in Dayton, Ohio, with Sarah Bennett. Like most studios, WeDoVids was paying for three separate tools to deliver client work: Frame.io for video review, Dropbox for file transfer, and a separate photo proofing tool for galleries — three logins, three bills, and a cost that climbed every time they added a team member or gave a client's art director their own seat.

In 2018, Brian built a single branded client portal to replace all three — combining photo delivery and video review under one login, with no per-seat pricing. WeDoVids ran on it for years, refining it across thousands of real commercial deliveries: weddings, commercial shoots, real estate, corporate video.

In 2026, after eight years of dogfooding it internally, WeDoVids opened that tool to other studios as FrameCourier — keeping the thing that made it worth building in the first place: one subscription, unlimited team members and clients, and every feature (including AI tools like Ask Milo) available on every plan, down to the free tier. It's a tool built by people who run a studio and needed it to work for their own deliveries first.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

FrameCourier's answer:

FrameCourier is built on a deliberately lean, framework-free stack rather than a heavy framework — no unnecessary layers, no bloat:

Backend: Vanilla PHP with a MySQL database — no MVC framework, just a custom, purpose-built application layer Payments: Stripe for subscription billing and metered storage add-ons Storage: Cloudflare R2 for photo/video object storage, with local caching for active work Video processing: ffmpeg (throttled for server stability) for transcoding, watermarking, mobile-format normalization, slideshow generation, and automatic transcription/subtitles AI: In-house AI integrations powering photo tagging, video/company/project summaries, Ask Milo's grounded video chat, and AI-powered search PDF/QR: Server-side PDF generation for model releases and comment exports, plus QR-code generation for shortlinks and model-release links Photo/RAW handling: Metadata extraction, iPhone HEIC support, and document preview generation Security: Bot protection and two-factor authentication

  • regular Vim has lua?!
Lua is quite small, encouraging distros to include it. The ubuntu gvim has, and the gvim AppImage linked from vim.org does. The default Makefile from github is set up to not include it, but you can uncomment one line there to get it. Source: over 3 years ago
