Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Tripadvisor and Splitvoy.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Splitvoy's answer:

HTML5, JavaScript, Firebase, Cloudflare

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Splitvoy's answer:

Primary audience in one sentence: People who travel in groups and want to track shared expenses without making everyone download an app or create an account.

The core user segments: 1. Friend groups going on trips (biggest segment) 25โ€“40 year olds planning weekends away, holidays, or city breaks. They're already coordinating on WhatsApp โ€” Splitvoy fits naturally into that workflow. They don't want a complex finance app, they want something that just works for 4โ€“7 days and then they're done with it. 2. Families travelling together Parents managing costs across adults and children, or extended family trips where different people are covering different things. The weighted splits feature is built specifically for them โ€” splitting a hotel room between two adults and two kids equally doesn't make sense. 3. Backpackers and budget travellers People on longer trips across multiple countries, dealing with multiple currencies. They need multi-currency tracking and they're price-sensitive โ€” free matters a lot to this group. 4. Work teams on offsites or conferences Small teams travelling together where one person shouldn't have to front all costs and chase reimbursements later. The no-signup requirement is especially valuable here โ€” not everyone wants to hand over a personal email to a third-party app for a one-off work trip. 5. Event groups (secondary) Stag/hen dos, weddings abroad, group sports trips โ€” any occasion where a group of people who don't regularly travel together need a quick, frictionless way to track shared costs.

What they all have in common: They're solving a temporary, specific problem โ€” not looking for a permanent finance tool. They want something they can start in 30 seconds, share with their group in one tap, and forget about when the trip ends. That's exactly what Splitvoy is built for.

What makes your product unique?

Splitvoy's answer:

The biggest differentiator โ€” zero friction to join Every competitor (Splitwise, Tricount, Settle Up) requires everyone in the group to download an app or create an account. Splitvoy doesn't. One person creates a trip, shares a link, and the entire group is in โ€” instantly. No barriers. Weighted splits Most apps only do equal splits or percentage splits. Splitvoy lets you assign weights โ€” so if two adults and two kids are sharing a hotel room, you can split it 2:2:1:1 rather than four equal shares. This is rare and genuinely useful for families. Real-time sync Changes appear live for everyone in the group without refreshing โ€” closer to a Google Doc experience than a traditional expense app. Most competitors are async (you add, others sync later). Settlement intelligence Rather than just showing who owes who, Splitvoy calculates the minimum number of transactions needed to settle all debts. In a group of 6, that's the difference between 15 payments and 5. It's a web app, not a mobile app No install required. Works on any device, any OS, any browser. This matters for international groups where people are on different platforms. Free with no account wall The free tier isn't crippled โ€” it covers most real trips. Competitors push you to paid plans quickly.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Splitvoy's answer:

The short answer: Splitvoy is the only group expense tool built around the reality that not everyone in your group wants to create an account, download an app, or sign up for yet another service.

vs. Splitwise (the market leader) Splitwise is powerful but it requires every single person in your group to create an account before they can participate. On a group trip, that means chasing 6 people to sign up before anyone can log an expense. Splitvoy needs zero sign-ups from group members โ€” just share a link and everyone's in immediately. Splitwise has also moved aggressively toward paid features, limiting free users significantly. vs. Tricount Tricount is app-only, meaning everyone needs a smartphone with the app installed. It works offline which is useful, but there's no real-time sync โ€” changes don't appear live for others. Splitvoy works in any browser on any device and syncs instantly. vs. Settle Up Settle Up requires accounts and is primarily app-based. It's solid for ongoing shared expenses (like housemates) but is overkill and friction-heavy for a one-off trip. Splitvoy is purpose-built for travel โ€” fast to start, easy to share, and designed to be thrown away when the trip ends. vs. Splittr Splittr is offline-first and doesn't sync across devices at all โ€” one person manages everything. That works for solo tracking but falls apart when a group wants everyone to add their own expenses in real time.

The three reasons that actually win people over: 1. Nobody needs to sign up. This is the killer feature. On any group trip there's always one person who "doesn't do apps" or can't be bothered. With Splitvoy they don't have to. The link works in any browser. This alone removes the biggest friction point of every competitor. 2. It handles the messy real-world splits. Families travelling with kids, groups where one person is on a tighter budget, couples sharing a room in a group โ€” weighted splits handle all of it. Most competitors force you into equal splits or rigid percentages. 3. It tells you exactly what to do at the end. Not just "Alex owes ยฃ47" across 5 people โ€” Splitvoy calculates the fewest possible payments to settle everything. A group of 8 people might need only 4 transfers instead of 28. That's the difference between a trip ending cleanly and a week of chasing people on WhatsApp.

What's the story behind your product?

Splitvoy's answer:

In 2025, I joined 10 friends and 4 kids on a trip across Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Three countries, three currencies, fifteen people, and what felt like a thousand shared expenses. Every dinner turned into a negotiation. Every hotel split became a spreadsheet problem. And the kids โ€” they weren't eating adult portions or taking adult seats, so splitting everything equally never made sense. We spent more time arguing over who owed what than actually enjoying the trip. I came back and looked for a tool that could handle it properly. Splitwise was close, but getting 11 adults to all create accounts before we could even start felt impossible โ€” and it couldn't handle weighted splits for the kids at all. Everything else was too simple or too rigid. So I spent the next two months building Splitvoy. The feature I cared most about was weighted splits โ€” the ability to say "the two adults in this room pay full share, the two kids pay half" and have the maths just work. Everything else followed from there: real-time sync so anyone in the group could add expenses from their phone, multi-currency for the three countries we were crossing, and a settlement plan that told each person exactly who to pay at the end. No sign-ups required. One link for the whole group. Because on a trip like that, the last thing you need is fifteen people trying to remember a password. That trip was the problem. Splitvoy is the fix I wish I'd had.
