ToolKnit is a free online toolbox that bundles 90+ everyday utilities into a single fast, clean, privacy-first interface. It covers PDF tasks (compress, merge, split, convert to/from Word and images), image tools (compress, convert between JPG/PNG/WebP, crop, resize, grid split, pixel art), video and audio (compress, extract audio, video-to-GIF, MP3↔WAV), plus text, time, and creative tools like a character counter, world clock, countdown timer, whiteboard, QR generator, spinner wheel, reaction time test, aim trainer, keyboard tester, and CPS test.

Unlike most online tool sites, ToolKnit never uploads files to a server. Everything is processed locally in the browser using WebAssembly (FFmpeg.wasm), PDF.js, the Canvas API, and the Web Audio API, which means no privacy risk, no waiting on uploads, and no file size limits tied to a paid server plan. There is no signup, no login, no email required, and no premium tier — every feature is free for everyone, every day. After the first visit, the site also works offline thanks to a service worker.

ToolKnit is built for students, freelancers, content creators, gamers, marketers, and developers who want one reliable place to handle small file and text jobs in under a minute, on any device, without installing software or trusting their files to a third-party server.

startbase.dev features and specs

  • Faster project setup
Startbase.dev appears designed to help developers and founders quickly scaffold new projects with pre-built templates and boilerplate code, saving significant time compared to starting from scratch.
  • Focus on startups/MVPs
The platform seems tailored toward entrepreneurs and indie developers who want to launch minimum viable products quickly, which can be valuable for validating ideas without heavy upfront investment.
  • Modern tech stack
Such starter kits typically integrate current, popular frameworks and tools (e.g., Next.js, Tailwind, authentication, payments), reducing the need to research and configure these integrations manually.
  • Reduced boilerplate maintenance
By using a pre-built base, developers can avoid reinventing common features like user authentication, billing, and dashboards, letting them focus on unique business logic instead.
  • Potential cost savings
Compared to hiring a development team to build core infrastructure from scratch, using a starter template service can be more affordable for solo founders or small teams with limited budgets.

Possible disadvantages of startbase.dev

  • Limited customization flexibility
Pre-built starter kits and boilerplates often come with opinionated architecture and design choices that can be difficult or time-consuming to modify for highly specific or unconventional use cases.
  • Vendor/template lock-in risk
Relying on a specific boilerplate structure may create dependencies on certain libraries, patterns, or update cycles that could complicate long-term maintenance if the base template becomes outdated.
  • Learning curve for the specific stack
If the chosen tech stack differs from what a developer is familiar with, there may still be a learning curve to understand and effectively customize the starter codebase.
  • Uncertain long-term support
As a smaller or newer platform, there may be concerns about the longevity of updates, community support, and documentation compared to more established open-source alternatives.
  • Pricing transparency concerns
Depending on the pricing model, users may find costs less transparent or harder to justify compared to free, open-source boilerplates available elsewhere in the developer community.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing ToolKnit and startbase.dev.

What makes your product unique?

ToolKnit's answer

ToolKnit runs every tool 100% inside the user's browser. Files never get uploaded to a server, which means no privacy risk, no waiting on uploads, and no file size caps tied to a server plan. It bundles 35+ tools — PDF, image, video, audio, text, time, and creative utilities — into one consistent UI, all completely free, with no signup, no login, and no daily account limits.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

ToolKnit's answer

Most online tool sites either upload your files to a server (slow + privacy risk), lock features behind a paywall, or force you to create an account. ToolKnit does none of those. Everything runs locally in the browser using WebAssembly, Canvas, and the Web Audio API, so it stays fast even on large files, works offline after the first load, and never asks for an email. Users get a single clean toolbox instead of 30 different sketchy single-purpose sites.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

ToolKnit's answer

ToolKnit is built for everyday digital workers who occasionally need a quick file or text utility — students compressing a PDF before submission, designers resizing images for social, marketers extracting audio from a video, gamers checking their keyboard or click speed, and developers grabbing text out of a document. The common thread is people who want a job done in under a minute, on any device, without installing software or signing up.

What's the story behind your product?

ToolKnit's answer

ToolKnit started from a simple frustration: needing a small thing done — compress a PDF, convert a WebP, count characters in an essay — and ending up on a different ad-heavy, signup-walled site every time, often with files getting uploaded to unknown servers. The goal was to build one fast, clean, privacy-first place that does all of those small jobs in the browser, with no accounts, no uploads, and no premium tier. Every tool added since has followed the same rule: if it can't run client-side, it doesn't ship.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

ToolKnit's answer

  • HTML, CSS (TailwindCSS), and vanilla JavaScript on the front end
  • WebAssembly (FFmpeg.wasm) for video and audio processing
  • PDF.js and pdf-lib for PDF rendering, merging, splitting, and compression
  • HTML Canvas API for image conversion, cropping, resizing, and pixel art
  • Web Audio API for audio extraction and conversion
  • Service Worker for offline support and asset caching
  • IndexedDB / localStorage for client-side state and personal bests

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

ToolKnit's answer

ToolKnit is a free, no-signup product, so it doesn't track users by company or maintain a customer list. Usage comes mainly from individual users worldwide — students, freelancers, content creators, gamers, and small teams — who use the site directly in the browser without any account.
