Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Tilebrush and patternico.

What's the story behind your product?

Tilebrush's answer

Making a seamless pattern usually means drawing in one app, offsetting the canvas, patching the seam, and exporting to see whether it actually tiles. The feedback loop is slow and the seam is where things go wrong. Tilebrush started as an attempt to remove that loop entirely: put the repeat in the drawing engine so the tiled result is what you see while the brush is still moving.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Tilebrush's answer

Vanilla JavaScript and the HTML Canvas 2D API — no framework, no WebGL, no WebAssembly. The drawing engine handles repeat folding and undo history directly. It ships as a static site on Cloudflare Pages with zero runtime dependencies, and work is autosaved to localStorage.

What makes your product unique?

Tilebrush's answer

Most seamless-pattern tools make you draw first and check the repeat later. Tilebrush folds every stroke through the repeat as you draw, so the tiled result updates live — including across the seam, where patterns usually break. It runs entirely in the browser on plain HTML Canvas: no install, no sign-up, and your artwork is never uploaded to a server.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Tilebrush's answer

Three practical reasons. It supports the three repeats surface designers actually use — grid, half-drop and brick — not just a square tile. Brush strokes respond to stylus pressure, so linework keeps its taper instead of coming out uniform. And there is nothing between you and the canvas: no account, no install, no upload step. You open a tab and draw.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Tilebrush's answer

People who need a repeating pattern and don't want to open desktop software for it — surface and textile designers, illustrators building print-on-demand or Etsy products, and game or web developers who need a tiling texture. It also suits anyone learning how seamless repeats work, since the tiled preview updates as you draw.

There are (free and paid) pattern generators online. Like https://patternico.com/ - you can upload own icons here. Unfortunately, you'd have to trace the final image as the download is in png, not vectors. Source: over 5 years ago
