ShiftTrained is an AI menu training platform for restaurants and bars.

Managers upload a menu PDF or a phone photo, or connect Toast or Square, and the AI writes 100 to 400 quiz questions in minutes covering dishes, ingredients, prices, allergens, and drinks. Staff take the quizzes on their own phones through a link, with no app to install and no accounts to create.

Allergen questions pass through a manager review queue before staff see them. Leaderboards, badges, and AI study guides keep teams retaking quizzes voluntarily, and managers track scores, completions, and knowledge gaps from one dashboard. POS connected menus stay in sync automatically, so a price change or a removed item updates the training on its own.

Built by a founder with 30 years of restaurant operating experience. Two Chicago restaurants measured an 11 percent lift in check totals and a 34 percent lift in wine sales after adopting it, both verified in POS data. Every plan includes every feature, and pricing scales only with team size, from a free trial that never expires to plans for teams of 20, 40, or 99.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Thread Notes and ShiftTrained.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

ShiftTrained's answer:

  • Fat Tommy's Grill & Sports Bar (Crestwood, IL)
  • Black Barrel Tavern (Chicago, IL)

What makes your product unique?

ShiftTrained's answer:

ShiftTrained trains staff on your actual menu instead of generic content. The AI reads your menu PDF, photo, or POS data and writes the quiz questions itself, so managers never build courses. Toast and Square menus stay in sync automatically, allergen questions pass a manager review before staff see them, and staff train on their own phones with no app to install.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

ShiftTrained's answer:

Most training tools hand managers an empty course builder. ShiftTrained does the building: upload a menu or connect your POS and the questions write themselves in minutes, then update automatically when the menu changes. It was built by a 30 year restaurant operator, and two Chicago restaurants measured an 11 percent lift in check totals and a 34 percent lift in wine sales after adopting it, both verified in POS data. Every plan includes every feature, and pricing scales only with team size.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

ShiftTrained's answer:

Independent restaurants and bars, and multi location restaurant groups. Managers, GMs, and owners build and send the training. Front of house staff such as servers, bartenders, and hosts take the quizzes on their phones. A back of house kitchen module is on the roadmap.

What's the story behind your product?

ShiftTrained's answer:

The founder, Terry Psaltakis, spent 30 years opening and running restaurants and kept watching the same thing happen: servers walking to tables without really knowing the menu, and training that never survived contact with a real service. Menu tests lived on paper, took hours to write, and went stale the moment a dish changed. He built ShiftTrained so the menu itself becomes the training, written by AI in minutes and kept current automatically. His own restaurants were the first customers.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

ShiftTrained's answer:

Next.js and TypeScript hosted on Vercel, Supabase Postgres, Anthropic Claude for the AI question pipeline, Stripe for billing, and native Toast and Square POS integrations.
