PremiumGuardHQ is the analytics platform for self-directed investors running the options wheel strategy. Connect a broker or import a CSV, and it detects every covered call and cash-secured put cycle from your trade data. No manual tagging, no spreadsheet formulas that break the day a position assigns.

The core problem it solves: the numbers on your broker screen are not your real numbers. Cost basis gets adjusted through assignments and premiums received, so most wheel traders cannot say what they actually earned. PremiumGuardHQ reconciles cost basis through every assignment and separates Premium P/L, Equity P/L, and Net P/L per cycle, with the full methodology published on the site.

The suite is five screens:

  • Wheel tracker: every open wheel with live prices, real cost basis, and the adjusted breakeven that sets your next covered-call strike.
  • Safe Withdrawal Engine: how much income you can pay yourself, sourced from closed-cycle profit and floored at a target equity level, so withdrawals never erode the capital that generates the income.
  • Automated insights: each account is checked overnight and after every sync. Earnings inside your expiration week, a short put drifting near the money, concentration past your cap, fills slipping from the strategy you declared: flagged with the numbers behind it. It never tells you what to trade.
  • Review book: every closed wheel written up on sync, from a per-ticker scorecard down to the legs of a single cycle.
  • Portfolio analytics: capital at risk by position, concentration against your declared cap, and premium yield against the capital that earned it.

Broker sync is read-only so PremiumGuardHQ can never place trades. The Free plan is free forever, no credit card: broker auto-sync, open positions, live quotes, and your last 20 closed cycles. Pro adds unlimited history, withdrawal recommendations, insights, and the scorecard, with a 14-day free trial.

  • Pacing
Some readers might find the pacing of the book too slow, particularly if they have some prior programming experience, as it aims to accommodate complete beginners.
  • Lack of Exercises
There are fewer exercises compared to some other programming books, potentially providing less practice for readers to reinforce their learning.

PremiumGuardHQ features and specs

  • Automatic cycle detection
Rebuilds full trading history into wheel, standalone, and zero-duration cycles from raw broker fills. No manual tagging or trade entry
  • 14-event trade classification
Every broker row is mapped to one of 14 trade events, with same-day ordering rules so assignments always process before sells.
  • Adjusted cost basis engine
Weighted-average cost, put-assignment cost, and call-exercise cost tracked through every assignment and premium collected.
  • Per-cycle P/L accounting
Premium P/L, Equity P/L, and Net P/L computed for every cycle, each traceable to the underlying fills.
  • Cycle ledger
Drill into any cycle and see every leg that built it.
  • Full-history backfill
Import years of history and the engine reconstructs every cycle; recalculation on demand.
  • Precision arithmetic
All money math runs on decimal arithmetic, never floating point, so P/L doesn't drift across thousands of trades.
  • Safe Withdrawal Engine
Computes what you can withdraw from realized closed-cycle profit against your own target equity level, using three-scenario gap logic.
  • Withdrawal logging
Record actual withdrawals per account with dates and notes.
  • Capital at risk
Peak true dollar exposure per position and per cycle, including assigned shares and pending obligations, not just margin.
  • Capital composition
Open capital split across open cycle equity, unresolved sold options, and standalone options.
  • Deep-dive dashboard metrics
Win rate, premium yield, net P&L, capital deployed, capital efficiency, average win, average days in cycle, equity drag, and max realized drawdown.
  • Time-range filtering
Dashboards and ledgers filterable by period.
  • Stock scorecard
Every ticker ranked by net P&L with cycle count, win rate, premium/equity split, top and bottom tiers, and active insight flags inline.
  • 18-rule insights engine
Three rule families: open risk, track record, and strategy conformance. Every rule documented on the public methodology page.
  • Overnight and post-sync runs
Every account is re-read nightly and after each sync.
  • Earnings awareness
Flags earnings dates landing inside an expiration week.
  • Strategy profiles
Declare your target annual return, concentration cap, strikes-OTM range, and DTE limits; the engine measures your fills against them and reports drift.
  • Insight lifecycle
Severity levels, acknowledge one or all, automatic aging and dedupe so stale flags don't pile up.
  • Read-only broker auto-sync
Schwab (OAuth), Interactive Brokers (Flex token), Robinhood and Fidelity (SnapTrade). Nightly sync, read-only by construction; no code path can place a trade.
  • CSV import with format auto-detection
Drop a broker export; the format is detected, trades classified, and duplicates skipped on re-import. Import preview and batch history included.
  • Broker-to-account linking
Connect a broker to an account that started as CSV without losing its history
  • Multi-account, multi-broker
Multiple accounts normalized into one dashboard with account switching
  • Transfer reconciliation
Classify deposits, withdrawals, and transfers (including splitting mixed events) so equity P/L is never confused with cash flows.

  • Guided setup wizard
Connect a broker or CSV, classify transfers, and declare your strategy in one onboarding flow.
  • Trade ledger

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Think Python and PremiumGuardHQ.

What makes your product unique?

PremiumGuardHQ's answer:

PremiumGuardHQ is built specifically for the wheel options strategy, not generic trade journaling. Connect your brokerage account and it automatically detects complete wheel cycles from your actual fills (cash-secured put, assignment, covered calls, called away) with no manual tagging or trade-by-trade data entry. It then reconciles cost basis, separates premium P&L from equity P&L, and computes how much income you can safely withdraw without eroding your capital base. That last question is the one no journal or spreadsheet answers.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

PremiumGuardHQ's answer:

Most alternatives are journals: you type in or tag every trade yourself, and the analysis breaks the moment you fall behind. PremiumGuardHQ syncs directly with your broker so your books stay current whether you remember to update them or not. It also answers questions that matter specifically to wheel traders: real premium yield, equity P&L net of assignments, capital at risk by position, and a safe withdrawal number. After every sync your whole account is reviewed, and risk, strategy drift, and track-record patterns surface as graded insights. There is a free plan, and Pro comes with a 14-day trial with no credit card required.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

PremiumGuardHQ's answer:

Self-directed options traders running the wheel strategy who treat premiums as a real income source, ranging from people supplementing a salary to people funding their lifestyle from their portfolio. They typically trade at Schwab, Interactive Brokers, Robinhood, or Fidelity, and they care about two questions: am I actually making money after assignments, and how much can I withdraw without shrinking my base.

What's the story behind your product?

PremiumGuardHQ's answer:

Founder Michael O'Donnell is a lifelong entrepreneur who sold his previous company, Cave Tools (barbecue tools e-commerce), in 2021 and began trading the wheel with his own capital. He was originally taught to withdraw premiums immediately as income. That worked until a downturn assigned him stock below cost basis and he realized he was quietly eroding his equity base, while broker cost-basis adjustments made the displayed numbers untrustworthy. He built an internal tool to answer three questions: what's my real premium yield, what's my equity P&L net of assignments, and how much is safely withdrawable. Conversations with other wheel traders surfaced the same gap, so the internal tool became PremiumGuardHQ.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

PremiumGuardHQ's answer:

The application is built with Next.js, React, and TypeScript, running on Vercel, with Supabase (Postgres) as the data layer and Stripe for billing. Brokerage data flows in through official broker API integrations and the SnapTrade connectivity platform, alongside CSV import. The marketing website is built with Astro.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

PremiumGuardHQ's answer:

PremiumGuardHQ serves individual investors rather than companies, so there are no enterprise logos to share, and customer identities stay private. The user base is self-directed wheel traders at mainstream brokerages
