SimpleX is a new platform for distributed Internet applications where the privacy of the messages and the network matters most. The current version is stable, robust and can be used from the terminal (command line) on all major desktop platforms (Linux/Mac/Win) and on Android phones in Termux!

There is currently no messaging application that respects user privacy and guarantees metadata privacy โ€” in other words, messages could be private, but a third party can always see who is communicating with whom by examining a central service and the connection graph. SimpleX, at its core, is designed to be truly distributed with no central server. This allows for enormous scalability at low cost, and also makes it virtually impossible to snoop on the network graph.

Teams for Linux features and specs

  • Native Linux Support
Provides a dedicated desktop client for Microsoft Teams on Linux distributions, filling a gap since Microsoft does not officially maintain a full-featured native Linux app anymore.
  • Electron-Based Wrapper with Enhancements
Built on Electron wrapping the web app, but adds useful desktop integration features like tray icons, notifications, and custom configuration options not available in the browser version.
  • Active Open Source Community
The project is actively maintained on GitHub with regular updates, community contributions, and responsiveness to issues, giving users confidence in ongoing support.
  • Customizable Configuration
Offers various configuration options (via config files or command-line flags) such as custom notification sounds, spellcheck settings, and startup behavior, allowing users to tailor the experience.
  • Cross-Distribution Packaging
Available in multiple package formats (AppImage, deb, rpm, snap, etc.), making installation easier across different Linux distributions.

Possible disadvantages of Teams for Linux

  • Unofficial Status
Since it's not an official Microsoft product, there is no guarantee of long-term support, and changes to the Teams web platform could break functionality without warning.
  • Electron Overhead
Being an Electron app, it can consume significant system resources (RAM and CPU) compared to a truly native application, leading to slower performance on lower-end hardware.
  • Dependency on Web App Changes
Since it wraps the Teams web client, any changes Microsoft makes to the web interface or APIs can cause bugs, broken features, or require frequent updates to maintain compatibility.
  • Limited Feature Parity
Some advanced features available in the official Windows or Mac clients (such as certain calling features, background effects, or deep OS integration) may be missing or less polished in this unofficial client.
  • Potential Security and Privacy Concerns
As a third-party wrapper handling corporate credentials and communications, some users may have concerns about trusting an unofficial client for sensitive business data, even though it primarily uses the official web app under the hood.

SimpleX chat features and specs

  • End-to-End Encryption
SimpleX Chat offers end-to-end encryption, ensuring that messages are only readable by the sender and the recipient, providing a high level of privacy and security.
  • Decentralized Messaging
The platform operates on a decentralized network, meaning there is no central server that could potentially be a single point of failure or monitoring.
  • Open Source
SimpleX Chat is open-source, allowing users to inspect the code for any vulnerabilities or privacy issues and enabling community-driven improvements.
  • No User Metadata
The service does not collect or store user metadata, enhancing user privacy and preventing tracking of communication patterns.

Possible disadvantages of SimpleX chat

  • Limited User Base
As a newer and less mainstream messaging app, SimpleX Chat may have a smaller user base, which could limit its adoption among friends and contacts.
  • Potential Usability Issues
As with many privacy-focused platforms, users may encounter a more complex setup or interface compared to mainstream messaging apps.
  • Feature Limitations
It might lack some advanced features offered by larger, established messaging platforms, such as extensive media sharing options or integrations with other services.
  • Network Reliability
Being decentralized, the performance and reliability of message delivery might vary depending on the network conditions and the number of participating nodes.

Analysis of Teams for Linux

Overall verdict

  • Teams for Linux is a solid unofficial desktop client that wraps the Microsoft Teams web app into a native-feeling Electron app, filling a real gap since Microsoft dropped official Linux support. It's actively maintained, lightweight compared to running Teams in a browser tab, and offers useful desktop integrations, though it's community-driven so support and feature parity with official clients can vary.

Why this product is good

  • Provides native desktop integration (tray icon, notifications, custom notification sounds) that the web version lacks
  • Actively maintained open-source project with frequent updates and community contributions
  • Available via multiple installation methods (AppImage, deb, rpm, snap, AUR) making it accessible across distros
  • Lighter weight and more app-like experience than keeping a browser tab open for Teams
  • Supports features like screen sharing, spellcheck, and custom CSS/themes
  • Free and open-source, allowing users to inspect or modify the code

Recommended for

  • Linux users who need Microsoft Teams since official support was discontinued
  • Users wanting a more native, less resource-heavy alternative to browser-based Teams
  • IT admins deploying Teams access across Linux workstations
  • Open-source enthusiasts comfortable troubleshooting community-supported software
  • Users who want extra desktop features like tray notifications and custom themes

Analysis of SimpleX chat

Overall verdict

  • SimpleX Chat is a good choice for users who prioritize privacy and encryption in their communications. Its decentralized nature and strong security measures make it a reliable option for those concerned about data breaches and surveillance. However, it may not have the same range of features or user base as more mainstream messaging apps, which could be a limitation for those looking for a more robust social networking experience.

Why this product is good

  • SimpleX Chat offers a unique approach to messaging by emphasizing privacy and security. It does not require phone numbers or email addresses to sign up, ensuring that users' identities remain private. The platform uses end-to-end encryption and does not store any messages on its servers, further enhancing user privacy. Additionally, the lack of centralized servers eliminates a single point of failure, making it more resilient against attacks.

Recommended for

SimpleX Chat is highly recommended for privacy-conscious individuals, activists, journalists, or anyone who handles sensitive information and values secure communication. It is also a good option for those interested in trying out decentralized, open-source communication platforms.
