GCInterview (Green Card Interview Prep) is a dedicated practice tool for the USCIS marriage-based green card (I-485) interview.

What it includes

  • 383 real interview questions across 13 categories — daily life, finances, relationship history, family, home, and immigration status — compiled from real interview reports and organized by how often officers ask them.
  • AI Mock Interview — practice with a simulated USCIS officer that asks adaptive follow-up questions based on your actual answers, rather than reading from a fixed script.
  • Separate Rooms (Stokes) mode — the feature no other tool offers. In a Stokes interview, USCIS separates spouses and asks each the same questions, then compares the answers. Separate Rooms recreates this: each partner answers 116 real question pairs independently on their own phone, and the app shows you every mismatch — before an officer finds it.
  • 37-item evidence checklist — track bona fide marriage proof, with substitutes for documents you don't have (no joint lease, no joint account, recently married).
  • Free guides on interview day, post-interview timelines, RFEs, second interviews, and what happens if you fail.

Who it's for

Couples preparing for a marriage-based green card interview. In 2026 USCIS interviews nearly all I-485 applicants and separates spouses more often than in prior years, so preparation matters more than it used to.

Languages: English and Spanish.

Pricing: The question database and guides are free to browse. Full access — unlimited AI mock interviews, the complete question bank, and Separate Rooms — is a $19 one-time purchase. No subscription.

Built by a couple who went through the I-485 process themselves after finding that existing resources were either scattered free listicles or $300+ attorney consultations.

startbase.dev features and specs

  • Faster project setup
Startbase.dev appears designed to help developers and founders quickly scaffold new projects with pre-built templates and boilerplate code, saving significant time compared to starting from scratch.
  • Focus on startups/MVPs
The platform seems tailored toward entrepreneurs and indie developers who want to launch minimum viable products quickly, which can be valuable for validating ideas without heavy upfront investment.
  • Modern tech stack
Such starter kits typically integrate current, popular frameworks and tools (e.g., Next.js, Tailwind, authentication, payments), reducing the need to research and configure these integrations manually.
  • Reduced boilerplate maintenance
By using a pre-built base, developers can avoid reinventing common features like user authentication, billing, and dashboards, letting them focus on unique business logic instead.
  • Potential cost savings
Compared to hiring a development team to build core infrastructure from scratch, using a starter template service can be more affordable for solo founders or small teams with limited budgets.

Possible disadvantages of startbase.dev

  • Limited customization flexibility
Pre-built starter kits and boilerplates often come with opinionated architecture and design choices that can be difficult or time-consuming to modify for highly specific or unconventional use cases.
  • Vendor/template lock-in risk
Relying on a specific boilerplate structure may create dependencies on certain libraries, patterns, or update cycles that could complicate long-term maintenance if the base template becomes outdated.
  • Learning curve for the specific stack
If the chosen tech stack differs from what a developer is familiar with, there may still be a learning curve to understand and effectively customize the starter codebase.
  • Uncertain long-term support
As a smaller or newer platform, there may be concerns about the longevity of updates, community support, and documentation compared to more established open-source alternatives.
  • Pricing transparency concerns
Depending on the pricing model, users may find costs less transparent or harder to justify compared to free, open-source boilerplates available elsewhere in the developer community.

Analysis of GCInterview

Overall verdict

  • GCInterview.com is a niche community forum focused on the U.S. Green Card and immigration process, useful primarily as a peer-support resource rather than an official or comprehensive service.

Why this product is good

  • Provides a long-running community forum where immigrants share real experiences about green card interviews and processing timelines
  • Offers case-specific insights (e.g., country-specific, employer-specific experiences) that can help set expectations
  • Free to access and use, with no paywall for basic browsing
  • Can help reduce anxiety by allowing users to see others' interview questions and outcomes

Recommended for

  • Individuals going through the U.S. green card or visa interview process who want peer insights

  • Users seeking community support rather than official legal advice
  • Not recommended as a substitute for official USCIS guidance or professional immigration attorney consultation

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing startbase.dev and GCInterview.

What makes your product unique?

GCInterview's answer:

GCInterview is the only interview prep tool built specifically for marriage-based green card (I-485) applicants. Instead of generic immigration info, it simulates the actual USCIS interview experience with an AI-powered officer who uses real interrogation techniques, including Stokes (separated room) interview practice. It was built by a couple who went through the process themselves.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

GCInterview's answer:

Most competitors offer static lists of questions or general immigration advice. GCInterview gives you a realistic mock interview with an AI officer who adapts to your answers, catches inconsistencies, and uses the same pressure tactics real officers use. It also includes a Stokes interview simulator where couples practice being questioned separately - something no other tool offers. Plus, it's a one-time $19 payment, not a subscription.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

GCInterview's answer:

Couples preparing for a marriage-based green card interview at a USCIS field office. Typically one partner is a US citizen (the petitioner) and the other is an immigrant (the beneficiary). They're usually anxious about the interview and want to feel prepared and confident before their appointment.

What's the story behind your product?

GCInterview's answer:

We built GCInterview while preparing for our own marriage-based green card interview. We couldn't find any tool that actually simulated the interview experience - everything was just blog posts with generic question lists. So we built what we wished existed: a realistic practice tool with an AI officer, evidence checklists, and Stokes interview prep. After using it for our own interview, we decided to make it available to other couples going through the same process.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

GCInterview's answer:

React, Vite, Supabase (authentication and database), Stripe (payments), and Claude AI by Anthropic (powering the mock interview officer).

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

GCInterview's answer:

GCInterview serves individual couples preparing for their USCIS marriage-based green card interviews. As a consumer product, we focus on helping everyday couples rather than enterprise clients. We've helped couples from dozens of countries prepare for interviews at USCIS field offices across the United States.
