Every note app can read your notes. All of them. They have to, that's how sync works. But what if you don't want that? What if you want notes that are actually private? That's why we built TheSecureNote. When you write something, it gets encrypted in your browser before it ever leaves your device. Your password never touches our servers. We never see what you write. If you forget your password, we can't help you recover it. Not because we're being difficult, but because we literally can't. Your notes are encrypted with a key that only exists in your browser. Nobody can read them without your password. Not us, not hackers, not governments. You pick a username, start writing, and that's it. No email required. No account setup. No tracking pixels. Free forever at thesecurenote.com/yourname. Want a custom domain? Pay once, own it forever. No subscriptions.

Standard Notes features and specs

  • End-to-End Encryption
Standard Notes ensures that all your data is encrypted before it leaves your device. This means only you have access to your notes, offering a high level of security and privacy.
  • Cross-Platform Support
Standard Notes is available on multiple platforms including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. This ensures that you can access your notes from virtually any device.
  • Open Source
The source code for Standard Notes is publicly available, which means it can be audited by anyone for security and reliability. This transparency builds trust within the community.
  • Extended Features via Subscription
While the basic version is free, subscribing to Standard Notes unlocks extended features such as editors, encrypted file storage, and automatic backups.

Possible disadvantages of Standard Notes

  • Limited Free Version
The free version of Standard Notes is quite basic, offering only plain text notes. Advanced features like rich text editors, themes, and file attachments require a subscription.
  • Subscription Costs
To access the extended features, users need to commit to a subscription plan, which may not be affordable or worthwhile for everyone.
  • Advanced Configuration Required
While the app is designed to be simple, making full use of its advanced features can require a bit of a learning curve, especially for users who aren't tech-savvy.
  • Limited Built-In Collaboration Features
Unlike some other note-taking apps, Standard Notes does not support real-time collaboration or sharing, which can be a downside for users looking to collaborate easily with others.

TheSecureNote features and specs

  • End-to-End Encryption
TheSecureNote provides end-to-end encryption for notes, ensuring that only the sender and intended recipient can read the content, enhancing privacy and security.
  • No Account Required
Users can send secure notes without needing to create an account, making it quick and easy to use without sharing personal information.
  • Self-Destructing Notes
Notes are automatically destroyed after being read by the recipient, reducing the risk of sensitive information being stored or accessed later by unauthorized parties.
  • Simple and Intuitive Interface
The platform offers a clean, straightforward interface that makes it easy for anyone to create and share encrypted notes without technical knowledge.
  • Free to Use
TheSecureNote offers its core secure note-sharing functionality for free, making it accessible to anyone who needs to share sensitive information securely.

Possible disadvantages of TheSecureNote

  • Limited Feature Set
Compared to more comprehensive secure messaging or note-taking platforms, TheSecureNote offers a relatively basic set of features focused primarily on one-time note sharing.
  • No Message History
Since notes are destroyed after reading, there is no way to retrieve or reference previously sent notes, which can be inconvenient if you need to access the information again.
  • Reliance on Link Sharing
The security model depends on securely sharing the note link itself, and if the link is intercepted before the intended recipient opens it, the note could be compromised.
  • Limited Brand Recognition
As a smaller, lesser-known service, it may lack the trust and established reputation of more well-known security-focused platforms, which could make some users hesitant to use it.
  • No Mobile App
TheSecureNote operates primarily as a web-based service without a dedicated mobile application, which may be less convenient for users who prefer app-based workflows on their phones.

Analysis of TheSecureNote

Overall verdict

  • TheSecureNote appears to be a niche utility offering encrypted, self-destructing note sharingโ€”useful for basic private communication, though it should not be treated as a replacement for enterprise-grade security or long-term data storage since detailed independent audits, transparency reports, and reputation history are limited.

Why this product is good

  • Provides a simple way to share sensitive information without permanent storage, reducing exposure over time
  • Encryption and self-destruct link features add a layer of privacy for casual sensitive communications
  • No account creation required for basic use, allowing quick and anonymous sharing
  • Lightweight and easy-to-use interface suitable for quick one-off secure messages

Recommended for

  • Individuals needing to share a password, private note, or sensitive info once without long-term storage
  • Users who want a quick, no-signup way to transmit small sensitive text securely
  • People wary of leaving sensitive information in regular email or chat history
  • Casual personal use rather than enterprise, compliance-heavy, or highly regulated environments

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Standard Notes and TheSecureNote.

What makes your product unique?

TheSecureNote's answer:

No accounts, no tracking. Just your thoughts, encrypted.

What's the story behind your product?

TheSecureNote's answer:

Every app tracks you now. Your notes app knows what you write. Your email provider reads your drafts. Your documents live on someone else's servers, readable by employees you'll never meet. They all promise privacy. They all have the same Terms of Service that nobody reads. And they all have the same problem: they can see everything. We got tired of it. So we built something different.
