Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing SQL Server Management Studio and Jam SQL Studio.

What makes your product unique?

Jam SQL Studio's answer:

SQL Server tools that work the same on macOS, Windows and Linux: graphical execution plans, SQL Server Agent jobs, a deadlock analyzer and Query Store, next to PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, SQLite and KQL in one editor and grid. It imports saved connections from Azure Data Studio, SSMS, DBeaver, DataGrip, TablePlus and other tools, and its local MCP server lets AI agents query your databases with read-only or approval-gated access, starting with queries blocked.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Jam SQL Studio's answer:

SSMS runs only on Windows, and Microsoft retired Azure Data Studio on February 28, 2026. Jam SQL Studio gives SQL Server users execution plans, Agent jobs and schema compare on a Mac or Linux machine, and covers PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle and SQLite with tools specific to each engine, such as the Oracle PL/SQL debugger. DBeaver and DataGrip support more database types; Jam SQL Studio supports fewer and goes deeper on each. The Personal tier is free with unlimited connections and no account; Pro is $9.99/month or $99/year per user and covers every machine you use.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Jam SQL Studio's answer:

SQL Server developers and DBAs on macOS or Linux, teams moving off Azure Data Studio, and developers who work with several engines, for example SQL Server in production, PostgreSQL in another service and SQLite on their own machine. Also Oracle developers who want a PL/SQL debugger outside Windows, engineers who query Azure Data Explorer, Application Insights or Log Analytics in KQL, and developers who let AI agents such as Claude Code or Cursor query a database with controlled access.

What's the story behind your product?

Jam SQL Studio's answer:

Jam SQL Studio started in 2024 as a personal replacement for Azure Data Studio on macOS and became a public product in early 2026, shortly before Microsoft retired Azure Data Studio. It is built by an independent, self-funded software studio in Poland; Pro subscriptions pay for development.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Jam SQL Studio's answer:

Electron, React and TypeScript, with the Monaco editor, Tailwind CSS, TanStack Query and Table, and Zustand. Database access uses the Node.js drivers for each engine (mssql, pg, mysql2, node-oracledb, better-sqlite3, azure-kusto-data and the Azure Storage SDK), plus Microsoft's SQL Tools Service and tree-sitter and ANTLR grammars for language features. The AI integration is built on the Model Context Protocol SDK.
