Speechable was built by a product engineer based in Tokyo who was frustrated with existing document-to-audio apps. The voices sounded robotic, the audio was full of footnotes and page numbers, and the good features were locked behind expensive subscriptions. He wanted to build something better: a tool that actually cleans up documents before reading them, uses natural AI voices, and makes the whole experience accessible to students and people with disabilities without gatekeeping.
