Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

Sketch 40 4 features
Modular JavaScript 5 features
  • Improved Export Options
Sketch 40 introduces enhanced features for exporting assets, allowing for better control over file formats and resolutions, which is particularly beneficial for designers working on multiple platforms.
  • Symbol Improvements
The update comes with better symbol management, including nested symbols and overrides, which help streamline the design workflow and maintain consistency across projects.
  • Performance Enhancements
The new version offers a more responsive experience with faster loading times and smoother interactions, which can significantly enhance productivity for users working on complex projects.
  • Enhanced User Interface
Sketch 40 refines the user interface to improve usability, making it easier for both new and experienced users to navigate and utilize the tool's features effectively.

Possible disadvantages

  • Compatibility Issues
Some users may experience compatibility issues with third-party plugins, as updates often require time for plugin developers to catch up and ensure compatibility.
  • Learning Curve for New Features
While new features are beneficial, they might also introduce a learning curve for existing users who need to take the time to understand and integrate them into their design processes.
  • Resource Intensive
With added features and enhancements, Sketch 40 may require more system resources, which could be a concern for users running on older hardware configurations.
  • Subscription Model
Sketch uses a subscription model for updates and support, which might not be preferable for users who want a one-time purchase option.
  • Improved Code Organization
Modular JavaScript allows developers to break down code into smaller, manageable modules. This enhances code readability and maintainability by organizing related functionality together.
  • Code Reusability
Modules encourage reusability by allowing the same piece of code to be used across different projects or multiple areas of the same application, reducing redundancy.
  • Scalability
As the application grows, managing code becomes easier with modular JavaScript. Each module can be developed, tested, and maintained independently, making the codebase more scalable.
  • Encapsulation
Modules provide encapsulation, preventing variables and functions from polluting the global namespace. This reduces the risk of naming conflicts and bugs.
  • Improved Testing
With code organized into discrete modules, writing unit tests becomes more straightforward. Each module can be tested individually, leading to more reliable and maintainable tests.

Possible disadvantages

  • Increased Complexity
Introducing modularity can add complexity to the build process, as it often requires module loaders or bundlers (like Webpack or Browserify) to manage dependencies.
  • Overhead
For smaller projects, using a modular approach might be overkill, introducing unnecessary overhead in terms of setup, configuration, and code management.
  • Learning Curve
Developers unfamiliar with modular JavaScript may face a learning curve, especially when dealing with module patterns, loaders, and bundlers.
  • Dependency Management
Relying on multiple modules can lead to complex dependency chains, making it challenging to track and resolve dependencies across different modules.
  • Performance Overhead
Modular JavaScript can introduce performance overhead if not managed properly, such as loading many small modules individually, leading to increased HTTP requests.

  • Sketch (v84) - and Craft plugin problems
It's incompatible with Sketch 84 apparently. Hopefully they will sort that soon. In the meantime I've gone back to v83.2. You can download it here: https://sketch.com/updates/. Source: over 4 years ago
