What makes your product unique?

Sigilet's answer

Sigilet is the only Open Badges issuer that runs entirely inside WordPress, on your own hosting, with no account and no company in the middle. The badge records live in your own database. The verification page an employer clicks sits on your domain, under your name. There is no licence check anywhere between a visitor and a verification page, so the badges keep verifying whether or not Sigilet is still around. Every competitor in this category is a hosted platform that holds the credential records for you and charges per badge or per recipient. Sigilet flips that: the free plugin is GPL-2.0 and has no quota, no expiry and no upgrade wall after you've used it a few times. You can use it forever for free!

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Sigilet's answer

  1. Cost. Hosted platforms price per badge or per active credential, so the bill grows with every cohort. Sigilet has no per-badge fee at all. The free plugin is free permanently, and Pro is a flat cost for unlimited badges per year.
  2. Durability. With a hosted platform, cancelling breaks every verification link you handed out over the past decade, because those links point at their server. Sigilet's links point at yours.
  3. Privacy. Sigilet never stores a recipient's email address. Each award keeps a per-assertion salted SHA-256 hash instead. Two badges held by the same person cannot be linked from the public record. Recipients never create an account or a password.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Sigilet's answer

Small and mid-sized training providers, membership associations, professional bodies, universities and employers who already run a WordPress site and already award certificates or recognition. Typically the person choosing it is the one person who runs the website and the training program, at an organisation issuing tens to low thousands of credentials a year. They care that the credential is verifiable and that it stays verifiable, and they cannot justify a per-badge platform contract. Also, anyone who was using BadgeOS, the WordPress badge plugin that closed in 2023 for a security issue.

What's the story behind your product?

Sigilet's answer

Sigilet started from a simple observation about how credential platforms fail. An organisation issues certificates for ten years, hands out thousands of verification links, then changes budget or vendor. The platform goes away and every one of those links breaks. The credential was never really theirs; it was a subscription to someone else's database.

I build and run IT for a not-for-profit in Australia, so I saw the problem from the buyer's side: quotes in the thousands per year for something that is, underneath, a page with a signed JSON file on it. WordPress already runs the sites these organisations use. The badge records could just live there. So Sigilet is a WordPress plugin that turns a site you already run into your own Open Badges issuer, and it is deliberately built so that nothing between the visitor and the verification page depends on me still being in business. It was published to the WordPress.org plugin directory in August 2026 and is GPL licensed.

  • Vanilla JavaScript and CSS, with no front-end framework and no build step in the shipped plugin
  • GD or Imagick for PNG badge baking, embedding the assertion as an iTXt chunk inside the image
