Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

Shutter 5 features
PostSharp 5 features
  • Comprehensive Screenshot Options
Shutter provides a wide variety of screenshot options including full screen, window, selection, and even web page capturing, making it versatile for different user needs.
  • Built-in Editor
The built-in editor allows users to add annotations, shapes, and text to screenshots directly within Shutter, reducing the need for additional software.
  • User-Friendly Interface
Shutter features an intuitive and user-friendly interface that makes it easy for users to navigate and utilize its functions efficiently.
  • Plugin Support
Shutter supports various plugins to extend its functionality, such as uploading screenshots to image hosting sites or integrating with other software.
  • Cross-Platform Support
Shutter is available for multiple Linux distributions, making it accessible for a large number of Linux users.

Possible disadvantages

  • Limited to Linux
Shutter is only available for Linux platforms, which excludes users on Windows and macOS from using the software.
  • Outdated Dependencies
Some users have reported issues with outdated dependencies, which can cause compatibility problems with newer Linux distributions.
  • Development Stagnation
The development of Shutter has slowed down in recent years, leading to fewer updates and potentially lacking some modern features that users might expect.
  • Installation Complexity
Installing Shutter on certain Linux distributions can be complex and may require the user to manually resolve dependencies or add third-party repositories.
  • Heavy Resource Usage
Shutter can be resource-intensive compared to other lightweight screenshot tools, which might affect performance on older or less powerful systems.
  • Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP)
PostSharp allows developers to implement AOP in .NET projects, which helps in separating cross-cutting concerns like logging, error handling, or validation, making the code cleaner and easier to maintain.
  • Code Reusability
By using aspects, developers can write code that can be easily reused across different parts of an application, reducing redundancy and improving efficiency.
  • Maintainability
PostSharp helps to create a more modular codebase. With cross-cutting concerns handled separately, it becomes easier to manage and modify without affecting the core business logic.
  • Performance
PostSharp weaves aspects into compiled code at build time, which generally leads to better runtime performance compared to other AOP approaches that might involve reflection or dynamic proxies.
  • Rich Library of Aspects
It provides a comprehensive library of pre-built aspects like caching, threading, and security, which can accelerate development by reducing the need to implement common functionalities from scratch.

Possible disadvantages

  • Learning Curve
For developers unfamiliar with AOP, there might be a steep learning curve to understand and effectively leverage PostSharp's capabilities.
  • Debugging Complexity
The abstraction layer introduced by aspects can make debugging more challenging as it might not be immediately clear where certain behaviors or errors originate from.
  • Cost
PostSharp is a commercial product with licensing fees, which might be a concern for small projects or organizations with limited budgets.
  • Build Time Overhead
The process of weaving aspects into the code can increase the time taken for builds, which might be noticeable and frustrating for very large projects.
  • Vendor Lock-in
Relying heavily on PostSharp-specific features might lead to challenges if there's a need to switch to a different AOP framework or if PostSharp's development ceases.

  • ShareX alternative for Linux?
I also used Flameshot and Shutter. Shutter was very feature rich, and I think it's the closest in terms of having the same workflow actions as ShareX -- I don't think it fully supports Wayland yet though and has a TON of dependencies.... Source: over 3 years ago
