  • Self-Hosted
Being self-hosted means users have full control over their data and privacy. There's no reliance on third-party servers, which enhances security and data ownership.
  • Lightweight
Shaarli is designed to be lightweight, enabling it to run on minimal server resources. This makes it accessible for users with limited hosting capabilities.
  • Easy to Install
The software is simple to install, often requiring just a basic web server and PHP support. Its straightforward setup process is user-friendly even for those with limited technical expertise.
  • Bookmarking and Tagging

  • Limited Advanced Features
While Shaarli is excellent for basic bookmarking, it lacks some advanced features found in more comprehensive solutions, like full-text search and advanced analytics.
  • Technical Knowledge Required
Self-hosting Shaarli requires some technical knowledge about web hosting, server management, and basic programming, which might be a barrier for non-technical users.
  • No Native Mobile App
Shaarli does not have a native mobile application, which might limit accessibility and usability for users who require mobile access to their bookmarks.
  • Manual Updates
Users are responsible for manually updating the software, which may be challenging for those unfamiliar with software maintenance tasks.

  • Lack of GUI
Buku does not provide a graphical user interface, which could be a significant downside for users who prefer visual interfaces.
  • Limited Integration
Since it operates independently from web browsers, it lacks direct integration, making it less seamless for users who want automatic saving of their browsing history.
  • Manual Syncing
There is no built-in cloud sync feature, so users have to manually manage backups and data synchronization across different devices.
  • Dependency on Python
Buku is written in Python, necessitating a Python environment for installation and operation, which might be a barrier for users unfamiliar with setting up Python on their systems.

  • Use Txt for Bookmarks
This is a cool tool: https://github.com/jarun/buku It's not perfect (it is not synced across devices) but it fills out metadata for you and isn't tied to a browser. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 month ago

I really like the buku terminal bookmark manager. https://github.com/jarun/buku I like that I can just `man buku` when I don't understand something and I can actually find the answer I'm looking for. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Show HN: Free Plain-Text Bookmarking
Hey folks, another option that I've settled on (after messing with shaarli, shiori and a few others) is Buku. • Ask HN: Is there a spiritual successor to del.icio.us?
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I stopped using many online cloud services because they get shut down or acquired by a big fish. Instead, I am using buku[1], a command-line utility to store, tag, search and organize bookmarks on a Linux desktop. But, it should work on any OS due to Python. All I have to do is backup a single ~/.local/share/buku/bookmarks.db SQLite file. [1] https://github.com/jarun/buku. - Source: Hacker News / about 3 years ago
