SecretScanner is a fully open-source tool under the Apache 2.0 license, making it freely available for individuals and organizations to use, modify, and contribute to without licensing costs.
  • Multi-Environment Scanning
SecretScanner can scan container images, running containers, and local directories/filesystems for secrets, providing versatile coverage across different deployment environments and CI/CD pipeline stages.
  • Extensive Secret Detection Rules
The tool comes with a comprehensive set of over 140 predefined rules using signature matching and regex patterns to detect a wide variety of secrets including passwords, API keys, tokens, certificates, and credentials from numerous services.
  • Lightweight and Fast
Built in Go, SecretScanner is designed to be lightweight and performant. It leverages efficient scanning techniques including the hyperscan library for high-speed pattern matching, making it suitable for integration into automated workflows.
  • Integration with Deepfence ThreatMapper
SecretScanner integrates seamlessly with the Deepfence ThreatMapper platform, allowing users to visualize and manage discovered secrets within a broader cloud-native security observability framework for enhanced threat detection and response.

Possible disadvantages

  • Higher False Positive Rate
Like many regex and signature-based secret scanners, SecretScanner can produce false positives, especially when scanning codebases or images with strings that resemble secrets but are not actual credentials, requiring manual triage.
  • Limited Community and Ecosystem
Compared to more established secret scanning tools like TruffleHog or GitLeaks, SecretScanner has a smaller community, fewer third-party integrations, and less extensive documentation and community-contributed resources.
  • No Native Git History Scanning
SecretScanner focuses on scanning filesystems, directories, and container images but does not natively scan Git commit history for secrets, which is a critical capability offered by competing tools for detecting previously committed and rotated secrets.
  • Dependency on Hyperscan Library
The tool relies on the Intel hyperscan library for pattern matching, which can introduce build and installation complexity, particularly on non-x86 architectures like ARM, potentially limiting portability and ease of setup.
  • Limited Reporting and Remediation Features
SecretScanner primarily outputs findings in JSON format and lacks built-in advanced reporting dashboards, alerting mechanisms, or remediation workflows unless paired with the broader Deepfence platform, which may not suit all users' needs.
  • Version Control
Manage changes with visibility on all versions to enhance traceability for prompt for teams and professionals.
  • Visualization
Side-by-Side Viewer with diff highlighting on changes made and comparison of outputs across different LLM models.
  • Advanced Analytics
OpenAI powered assistant to provide analyisis on the test outputs and improvment. Gemini powered evaluation on cost efficiency, readability metrics
