It holds state. Almost every recipe tool is a search box: you tell it what you have, it finds matches, and it forgets you the moment you leave. Riff keeps your pantry between visits, with expiry dates, so the question changes from "what can I make with these five things" to "what should I cook tonight given what I own and what is about to go off". The meal planner, the shopping list and the recipe generator all read from that one persistent list.

Choose it if you throw food away and want the tool to notice before you do. Riff starts from your inventory and expiry dates, plans the week around whatever is closest to spoiling, and shops only for the gap.

Do not choose it if you would rather not maintain an inventory. If you want to find something to cook in the next ten seconds without keeping a pantry up to date, a search tool like SuperCook is genuinely less work. Riff earns its keep over weeks, not in a single visit.

Home cooks who already buy food and still end up throwing some of it out. Typically cooking for one to four people, several times a week, with a fridge and a cupboard that drift out of sync with what they planned. Mostly US and Canada, since the Instacart handoff and the pricing are aimed there. It is not built for recipe browsing or for people who plan a week of meals and then shop to that list.

It started from a specific annoyance: knowing there is food in the fridge, not knowing what to do with it, and throwing some of it out a week later. Recipe sites answer the opposite question, the one where you already know what you want to cook and just need the method. Riff was built backwards from the fridge instead of forwards from the dish.
