Remotely.fm features and specs

  • High-Quality Audio
Remotely.fm provides high-quality audio recording by capturing each participant's audio locally and then uploading it to the cloud. This ensures clear sound quality for podcasts or interviews.
  • Ease of Use
The platform features an intuitive user interface that makes it easy for users to schedule, record, and manage sessions without requiring technical expertise.
  • Browser-Based
Remotely.fm operates entirely within a browser, eliminating the need for participants to download or install additional software, which facilitates easier collaboration.
  • Built-In Scheduling
Integrated scheduling tools make it simple to arrange meetings and send calendar invites, streamlining the process of organizing recordings.
  • Real-Time Backups
The platform offers real-time backups of recordings to prevent data loss, ensuring that user content is always protected and recoverable.

Possible disadvantages of Remotely.fm

  • Limited Free Features
While Remotely.fm offers some features for free, advanced features and extended recording capabilities may require a subscription, potentially limiting functionality for free users.
  • Reliance on Stable Internet
Although recordings are saved locally, a stable internet connection is still necessary for platform functionality and uploading final audio files.
  • Potential Learning Curve
New users might experience a learning curve when familiarizing themselves with all features and capabilities of the platform.
  • Browser Compatibility
Users may encounter issues if their browser is not fully compatible or up-to-date, potentially limiting the platform's effectiveness.
  • Limited Video Features
As of the current capability, the platform focuses more on audio recording, which may not be ideal for users looking for robust video recording features.

startbase.dev features and specs

  • Faster project setup
Startbase.dev appears designed to help developers and founders quickly scaffold new projects with pre-built templates and boilerplate code, saving significant time compared to starting from scratch.
  • Focus on startups/MVPs
The platform seems tailored toward entrepreneurs and indie developers who want to launch minimum viable products quickly, which can be valuable for validating ideas without heavy upfront investment.
  • Modern tech stack
Such starter kits typically integrate current, popular frameworks and tools (e.g., Next.js, Tailwind, authentication, payments), reducing the need to research and configure these integrations manually.
  • Reduced boilerplate maintenance
By using a pre-built base, developers can avoid reinventing common features like user authentication, billing, and dashboards, letting them focus on unique business logic instead.
  • Potential cost savings
Compared to hiring a development team to build core infrastructure from scratch, using a starter template service can be more affordable for solo founders or small teams with limited budgets.

Possible disadvantages of startbase.dev

  • Limited customization flexibility
Pre-built starter kits and boilerplates often come with opinionated architecture and design choices that can be difficult or time-consuming to modify for highly specific or unconventional use cases.
  • Vendor/template lock-in risk
Relying on a specific boilerplate structure may create dependencies on certain libraries, patterns, or update cycles that could complicate long-term maintenance if the base template becomes outdated.
  • Learning curve for the specific stack
If the chosen tech stack differs from what a developer is familiar with, there may still be a learning curve to understand and effectively customize the starter codebase.
  • Uncertain long-term support
As a smaller or newer platform, there may be concerns about the longevity of updates, community support, and documentation compared to more established open-source alternatives.
  • Pricing transparency concerns
Depending on the pricing model, users may find costs less transparent or harder to justify compared to free, open-source boilerplates available elsewhere in the developer community.

  1. Reliable and easy

We've been using Remotely for a year and never had any technical issues. Recording quality is great, and the branding functionality makes us seem more professional.

The only con is that it doesn't do live streaming yet, if you need that.

  • fixing portrait mode phone footage
I'm using Premiere Pro 22.1.1. The footage was recorded online using remotely.fm. I've found the distortion effect went away when I stopped using a proxy for the portrait footage. Footage is MPEG4 AAC, H.264. The portrait footage is 720x1080, the landscape footage is 1920 x 1080. If I can ask another question, what do I need to do to be able to edit this footage together in the same sequence? i.e. I guess the next... Source: over 3 years ago
  • Riverside vs Zencastr? For a double-ender podcast (experiencing audio drift).
Hey there, I'd like to suggest Remotely to add to your platform decision. We've built it with audio drift in mind, you're guaranteed to have all tracks at same length. Source: over 3 years ago
  • footage is pixelated when playing but not when paused
I recorded a video conversation on podcast software (remotely.fm), it looks pixelated on playback but when I pause the frame looks perfectly crisp. One speaker is 30fps, the other is 26.61 fps. The pixelated speaker is the one at 26.61fps. Can I fix this? If so, how? This will end up in a documentary. Thanks. Source: over 3 years ago
  • Anyone else use anchor for podcasts?
As for what to use, I personally recommend Remotely. It's a pretty straightforward web-based recorder. They've even got some auto-mix software now that you can use for the episode. If you want to go a step beyond just auto-mixing, you should look at using something like Descript or a true DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) like Audition or Pro Tools. Source: over 3 years ago
  • How to record guest calling in for interview?
Remotely.fm I have found to be pretty good for video plus audio. They also do just audio calls. Source: almost 4 years ago
