Have you tried old reddit with the RES extension? I'm not a fan of the way comments appear without the extension, but the extension boosts readability significantly. I can't stand reddit's design without it. Source: almost 2 years ago
It's a giant step backwards in site design. Discuit wastes an incredible amount of screen space in making the site look pretty. Scroll down a bit and you'll see that more than half of your screen is empty and there is very little submissions displayed. Look at https://old.reddit.com/ and see the difference between the two. I built https://flingup.com as a non-profit alternative. So far no reddit mods were willing to setup base there. Iโm baffled by what they are willing to tollerate over here. Anyways, Iโll keep building the new platform regardless, so /r/pics if up for grabs on FlingUp. Source: about 2 years ago

Check out Flingup.com. I like it better personally. Its also built with C# so its being made to be fast. They said direct message support is coming soon to flingup. Theres also saidit.net which is a fork of old reddit but I literally know nothing about it. Limereader by u/busymom0 is coming soon as well. Not sure when. Its in active development.
