RealTerm features and specs

  • Versatility
RealTerm supports multiple communication protocols such as RS232, RS485, and USB, making it highly versatile for various serial communication projects.
  • Hexadecimal Display
It allows users to display data in hexadecimal format, which is useful for debugging binary protocols and interpreting non-text data.
  • Scriptable and Automatable
RealTerm can be controlled via scripting languages like Python, making it suitable for automated testing and repetitive tasks.
  • Advanced Terminal Features
Features like capturing data to files, controlling modem lines, and manipulating baud rates provide advanced capabilities for power users.
  • Free and Open Source
RealTerm is a free tool available under the GPL license, making it accessible to hobbyists and professionals without any cost.

Possible disadvantages of RealTerm

  • User Interface
The user interface is considered outdated and can be overwhelming for new users, making the learning curve steep.
  • Windows Only
RealTerm is only available for Windows, limiting its usability for users on other operating systems like Linux or macOS.
  • Limited Documentation
The documentation is not very comprehensive, which can make troubleshooting and learning to use advanced features difficult.
  • Performance Issues
RealTerm can sometimes exhibit performance issues such as lag or crashes, especially when handling large amounts of data.
  • No Active Development
The project is not actively maintained, which means users may encounter bugs or security vulnerabilities that will not be fixed in future updates.

GNU Screen features and specs

  • Session Management
GNU Screen allows you to detach and reattach sessions, making it possible to keep applications running in the background even if you disconnect from a terminal session.
  • Multiple Windows
It provides the ability to open multiple windows within a single terminal session, allowing you to manage different tasks concurrently without opening additional shell instances.
  • Terminal Sharing
Screen supports terminal sharing, enabling multiple users to view and interact with the same terminal session, which is useful for collaborative work and troubleshooting.
  • Scrollback History
You have access to scrollback history, allowing you to review command output and logs even after they've disappeared from view in the normal terminal.
  • Customizability
GNU Screen provides extensive options for customization through its configuration file, enabling users to tailor keybindings, appearances, and functionalities to their preferences.
  • Resource Efficiency
Being a text-based application, GNU Screen is extremely light on system resources, making it suitable for use on systems with limited computational power or memory.

Possible disadvantages of GNU Screen

  • Steep Learning Curve
New users may find GNU Screen's interface and command syntax difficult to learn and use efficiently, especially without dedicated tutorials or documentation.
  • Outdated User Interface
Compared to more modern terminal multiplexers like tmux, GNU Screen may feel outdated in terms of user interfaces and ease of use.
  • Limited Functionality
While robust for basic session management, GNU Screen lacks some of the advanced functionalities and features found in newer tools, such as better scripting integrations and extended multi-pane support.
  • Configuration Complexity
The process of configuring the .screenrc file to achieve certain custom setups can be cumbersome and unintuitive for some users.
  • Competition from Alternatives
Alternatives like tmux offer similar functionalities with more modern features, resulting in a decline in the usage of GNU Screen among new users.

  • How do graph output from a serial port when I don't know exactly what signal its sending?
This is not really Labview stuff, but there's a nice little terminal program called Realterm I've been using whenever I need to decrypt unknown serial stuff. It's really nuts and bolts sort of a software and you can easily turn the message into binary or hexadecimal and flip all the control bits and all that neat stuff. Source: almost 5 years ago
