I do hobby programing. It is sometimes to create something (supposedly) useful. Lately though it is more discovery and a little math like. I enjoy Project Euler (https://projecteuler.net/. Before making a large commitment, I'd try out programming, and see if it is something you enjoy and have an aptitude for. There's a large number of online resources for it.
