About PressReader.com and BreakNow

BreakNow

No description of PressReader.com yet.

I run virtual trainings, and the same thing kept happening: I’d say, “See you back in 15 minutes,” and 18 minutes later I’m still staring at a half-empty Teams meeting, unsure whether to start or keep waiting. The problem isn’t that people are flaky. It’s that once they step away from their desk,...

Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

PressReader.com 5 features
BreakNow 3 features
  • Extensive Content Library
PressReader offers access to thousands of newspapers and magazines from over 100 countries in more than 60 languages, making it one of the largest digital newsstands available. Users can explore a vast range of local and international publications in one place.
  • Multi-Platform Accessibility
PressReader is available across multiple platforms including web browsers, iOS, Android, and dedicated apps, allowing users to read content seamlessly on smartphones, tablets, and desktops wherever they are.
  • Library and Hotel Partnerships
PressReader partners with public libraries, hotels, airlines, and other institutions to provide complimentary access to users. This means many people can enjoy the service for free through their local library card or while staying at participating hotels.
  • Full Replica and Interactive Formats
Publications are available in both full-page replica format (preserving the original newspaper/magazine layout) and a text-view mode for easier reading on smaller screens. This gives readers flexibility in how they consume content.
  • Offline Reading and Download Capability
Users can download publications for offline reading, which is particularly useful for travelers or those with limited internet connectivity. This makes it convenient to read content anytime without needing an active connection.

Possible disadvantages

  • Subscription Cost
The individual subscription price can be relatively expensive compared to other digital news services, especially for users who only read a handful of publications. Without institutional access (like a library), the cost may not be justified for casual readers.
  • Inconsistent Publication Availability
Not all publications are available in every region, and some major newspapers or magazines may be missing from the catalog or have delayed releases. Availability can also change without notice as licensing agreements shift.
  • App Performance Issues
Some users report that the app can be slow to load, especially when downloading large publications. The app may also experience occasional crashes, lag, or syncing issues across devices, which can detract from the reading experience.
  • Complex Navigation and Interface
With such a large volume of content, finding specific publications or articles can sometimes be cumbersome. The interface, while feature-rich, can feel cluttered and overwhelming for new users who are not familiar with the platform.
  • Limited Search and Archiving
The search functionality can be limited when trying to find older articles or past editions. Archived content availability varies by publication, and users may not be able to access back issues beyond a certain timeframe, limiting research capabilities.
  • Visual countdown
Share your screen and participants know exactly how much time is left. No ambiguity, no mental math across time zones.
  • QR code for mobile
Participants scan it and get the countdown on their phone. They can step away from their desk and still know when to return.
  • Live polls during breaks
Throw up a quick question before break starts. Participants vote from their phones. You see results in real-time. Great for energy checks or just something fun to bring people back.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing PressReader.com and BreakNow.

What makes your product unique?

BreakNow's answer:

BreakNow is a professional break timer built specifically for virtual trainings, workshops, and meetings. Unlike generic countdown tools or simple alarms, it’s designed to keep everyone on the same schedule during live, virtual group sessions - with clear timing visible to participants so they know when a break starts and ends.

Key points: - Timer tailored for presenter-led virtual sessions rather than personal reminders. - Enables organized, predictable transitions between content and breaks. - Helps trainers and facilitators maintain audience engagement and pacing in distributed learning or meeting environments.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

BreakNow's answer:

When comparing BreakNow to general break/reminder timer apps or DIY approaches:

  1. Built for group context Other timers (like single-user break reminders) focus on individual health or productivity. BreakNow’s value is in shared scheduling across a group during a structured session.

  2. Improves meeting flow It gives a clear visual cue to the audience instead of relying on verbal cues or stopwatch features, making sessions feel more professional and synchronized.

  3. Simplifies facilitation Instead of manually telling participants to “break now, back in 10 min”, BreakNow gives an objective count that everyone can see and follow.

In contrast, many break tools are personal reminders (alerts on a device) rather than public countdown and scheduling tools.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

BreakNow's answer:

Primary users: - Virtual trainers and facilitators - Online workshop leaders - Corporate meeting hosts - Event organizers (especially virtual or hybrid events where break timing matters)

These are professionals who run scheduled sessions with groups and need to manage time transparently for participants.

What's the story behind your product?

BreakNow's answer:

I’m an instructor who runs a lot of virtual trainings and workshops. And the same thing kept happening over and over again.

I’d say, “Let’s take a 10–15 minute break,” start a timer on my phone or watch the clock… and when it was time to resume, half the group still wasn’t back. I’d sit there wondering whether to start, wait, or awkwardly ask, “Is everyone back?”

The problem wasn’t that people didn’t care. Once participants step away from their desks, they lose any sense of time. There’s no shared clock. No signal that the break is almost over. And in virtual sessions, there are no hallway cues or coworkers heading back to the room.

BreakNow came from scratching that exact itch.

I wanted a simple way to make break timing visible and shared, so everyone knows when to come back - without nagging, guessing, or breaking the flow of the session. Something purpose-built for instructors and facilitators, not another personal productivity timer.

So I built BreakNow: a tool designed from real teaching friction, to make virtual sessions smoother, more professional, and less awkward for both instructors and participants.
