Most tools that help you decide give you a random answer. A wheel spins, and it tells you what to do. PickChill does the opposite: it never picks anything for you.

You give it your options, and it shows them to you two at a time. You answer one easy question each time: which of these two do you prefer? After a handful of answers, PickChill works out your top pick from what you said.

The second difference is that PickChill holds two kinds of list. A decision finishes and gives you one answer. A ranking never finishes: you add one option at a time, and each new option finds its place by being compared against the ones already there.

Because comparing two things is easy, and comparing ten things is not.

If you look at a list of ten options, you freeze. If someone asks you "this one or that one?", you answer straight away. PickChill is built on that difference, and it does the organising so you only ever answer the easy question.

Compared to a spinner, you get an answer you actually agree with, because it came from your own picks. Compared to the pairwise tools used at work, PickChill is made for a normal person and a normal question, not for a project plan.

Where to eat, what to watch, which flat to take, which job offer to accept, which name to use. Anyone who has a list of options in their head and cannot settle on one.

It is also used to keep personal rankings that grow over time, like favourite places, films or games.

It is not a team tool. There is no group voting and no shared workspace. One person decides, and they can send the same options to one friend to see what that friend would pick.

Next.js 16 and React 19, written in TypeScript. Tailwind CSS 4 with shadcn/ui for the interface, and Motion for animation.

Data is in PostgreSQL (Neon), accessed with Drizzle ORM. Auth.js v5 handles sign-in, with Google and email plus password. Redis (Upstash) handles rate limiting and caching.

Hosted on Vercel. Payments through Paddle. Email through Resend. Scheduled reminders run on a Cloudflare Worker. Analytics is PostHog, self-proxied, with no cookie banner because no non-essential cookie is set.

The code is a pnpm and Turborepo monorepo.

PickChill started as a tournament bracket. Two options meet, one goes through, and you repeat until one is left. That part still runs underneath everything.

What changed was the language. A bracket has winners, matches and champions, and none of those words fit what people were actually doing. Nobody wants to hold a tournament. They want to know where to eat. So the sports words came out and the deciding words went in: options, comparisons, and one top pick.

The name changed for the same reason. It was called Bracketly until June 2026, which described the diagram behind it instead of the point of it. PickChill went live in July 2026.

Rankings came later and changed what the product is. A decision ends. A ranking never does - you keep adding to it one option at a time, and it stays useful for months. That is now half of what people use it for.
