Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

PDFStart 4 features
PDFGate 7 features
  • Convenient PDF access
Tools branded as PDFStart generally aim to put common PDF tasks such as converting, editing, merging or viewing in one place, which can save time compared with searching for separate tools. I could not verify the exact feature set on pdfstart.com, so check the site for specifics.
  • Likely simple, task-focused interface
Online PDF utilities of this kind usually have a minimal interface where you upload a file and pick an action, so non-technical users can get started quickly. Confirm this by trying the tool on a non-sensitive document.
  • No heavy software install (if web-based)
If the service runs in the browser, it works across operating systems without installing desktop software. This is useful for occasional use or on shared and locked-down computers.
  • Possible free tier for basic tasks
Many comparable services let users try basic functions for free before asking them to pay. This lets you test output quality before committing, but check the site for the actual pricing and limits.
  • HTML to PDF
Convert raw HTML or a live URL into a PDF with a single API call.
  • Fillable Form Fields
Add native form fields such as text boxes and checkboxes to any PDF.
  • Form Data Extraction
Read the values entered in a filled PDF form as structured data.
  • Digital Signatures
Send documents for signing with envelopes, multiple recipients, embedded signing links and status webhooks.
  • PDF Security
Password protect PDFs and flatten forms so filled content cannot be edited.
  • Watermarking and Compression
Add watermarks to PDFs and reduce their file size.
  • MCP Server
Let AI agents generate, fill and sign PDFs through the PDFGate MCP server.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing PDFStart and PDFGate.

What makes your product unique?

PDFGate's answer:

PDFGate covers the whole document workflow in one API. You can generate PDFs from HTML or URLs, add and fill native form fields, extract form data, and send documents for digital signature without stitching several vendors together.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

PDFGate's answer:

Most HTML to PDF APIs stop once the PDF is rendered. PDFGate goes further, with fillable form fields, flattening, watermarking, password protection, compression and signing envelopes with webhooks. It also ships an MCP server, so AI agents can generate and manage PDFs directly.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

PDFGate's answer:

Developers and SaaS teams that generate invoices, contracts, reports and forms from their own backend, and businesses that need those documents filled and signed.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

PDFGate's answer:

PDFGate’s REST API is built with Node.js and NestJS, which handle document generation, form fields and webhooks. Digital signing runs as a separate Java service, chosen for its mature cryptography and PDF signing libraries. The platform is hosted on AWS. Developers can integrate through the REST API or through the PDFGate MCP server, which lets AI agents work with PDFs directly.
