Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Optioneer and Cert Decoder.

What's the story behind your product?

Optioneer's answer

  • Optioneer started from a simple problem: tracking options trades properly with spreadsheets and broker interfaces was unnecessarily difficult.
  • It was built by a retail options trader who wanted one place to understand P&L, Greeks, portfolio risk and multi-leg strategies without doing everything manually.
  • Over time, it expanded from a portfolio tracker into a broader options platform with screeners, trade discovery, Wheel tracking, alerts, broker sync and mobile apps.
  • The product has now transitioned from free access to a Premium-only model with a 7-day trial.

Cert Decoder's answer:

I built certdecoder.com over the weekend for my own needs. Sometimes in my work, I need to verify and check certificate details.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Optioneer's answer

  • The frontend is built with TypeScript and Tailwind CSS and deployed through Vercel.
  • The backend uses Python, FastAPI, Supabase, Redis and Railway.
  • Resend handles transactional email.
  • The mobile application uses Capacitor, allowing the product to extend the web platform to native Android and iOS apps.
  • RevenueCat is used for mobile subscription infrastructure, alongside App Store and Google Play billing.
  • The architecture also supports market-data integrations, alerts and read-only broker synchronization.

Cert Decoder's answer:

certdecoder.com was built using just JavaScript and HTML—simple, fast, and with all processing happening locally in your browser, so no certificate data is sent to any server

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Optioneer's answer

  • Self-directed retail options traders who want a better way to track and understand their portfolios.
  • Income-focused traders using covered calls, cash-secured puts and the Wheel strategy.
  • Traders using spreads, iron condors, strangles and other multi-leg strategies.
  • Traders looking for screeners and discovery tools to identify potential options opportunities.
  • Users who want to move away from spreadsheets and fragmented broker tools toward one dedicated options platform.

Cert Decoder's answer:

certdecoder.com is primarily built for developers, sysadmins, cybersecurity enthusiasts, and DevOps engineers.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Optioneer's answer

  • Optioneer combines options trade tracking, portfolio analytics, screeners, discovery tools and broker sync in one focused platform.
  • It supports 19 options strategies and automatically calculates P&L and Greeks across positions and portfolios.
  • The interface is designed to be clean and easy to use instead of overwhelming traders with unnecessary complexity.
  • Optioneer is available on web and Android, with iOS coming soon.
  • Pricing is simple: a 7-day Premium trial, followed by $19/month or $150/year.

Cert Decoder's answer:

Simple, fast, and reliable. Some similar tools can’t even decode basic certificates. I rigorously tested my tool with many real-world certificates and covered several edge cases where competitors fall short.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Optioneer's answer

  • Optioneer is a B2C product for individual retail traders, rather than an enterprise SaaS dependent on a few large customers.
  • There are currently no individual customers that represent a significant concentration of revenue.
  • Paying users are primarily self-directed options traders using strategies such as covered calls, cash-secured puts, the Wheel and multi-leg spreads.
  • This gives the business a diversified subscription model rather than reliance on one or two major accounts.

Cert Decoder's answer:

certdecoder.com is primarily built for developers, sysadmins, cybersecurity enthusiasts, and DevOps engineers.

Why? Because I built certdecoder.com and couldn’t find a decent place to submit it. So I said screw it — I’ll build my own. With blackjack and hookers. - Source: dev.to / over 1 year ago
