Questions and Answers

As answered by people managing OptApply and Lazyapply.

What makes your product unique?

OptApply's answer

We are geared towards scaling your job search and getting you past the ATS filters. Build yourself a "master" resume with all of your job history, push it into our site along with the job description you're looking at, and it will send you a customized resume tailored specifically for the job you're looking for. It also provides you an analysis showing how well your resume fits the job posting.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

OptApply's answer

We offer a very reasonable trial tier that is less expensive than most competitors, so the barrier for entry is low. We also don't deal with subscriptions. If you're using this to find a job, why should you be on the hook for a renewal if you land a job? Just pay once with us, and then buy some more time if you want to try again.

How would you describe your primary audience?

OptApply's answer

We work great for 3 groups of people: - Those who are looking for that first entry point into their career, or a recent college grad. - Those who are looking for a career change. - Those who are looking to climb the corporate ladder and need to find a new company to do it. - Those who were laid off or currently unemployed, and are looking for an opportunity.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

OptApply's answer

The frontend is built with NextJS, the back-end is consuming a combination of Stripe for payments, Kinde for general auth, and AWS services for service functionality.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

OptApply's answer

This is a new startup that serves B2C. I do not have the identity of my customers.

What's the story behind your product?

OptApply's answer

I and my friends have been shocked at how many jobs you need to apply for before you get a resume. I've seen so many sankey diagrams on Reddit from people applying for 500 jobs, getting 10 interviews, and maybe 1 offer. I've also read many articles from recruiters expressing frustrations with qualified applicants getting filtered out of the system due to automated HR tools.

This caused me to realize 2 things: - It really is a numbers game, so the faster and more frequently you can apply, the better. - HR filters are looking for specific things. By tailoring your resume to target those things, you improve your hit rate.

Thus, OptApply was born.

  • Ask HN: Are YC startups *actually* hiring?
As a YC company that is currently hiring, yes. And all of the companies I know are also struggling to find engineers. But the job listings (HN, WorkAtAStartup) practically never bring in good candidates. A few big problems: 1. AI Spam. I categorized the inbound we got the other day from a job post. Out of 172 daily applicants, we got 22 that looked reasonably like a person, and 150 that were primarily AI generated... - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
  • The job market is beyond fked
If you're at the point of burnout where you just need a job and don't really have any stipulations - pay for an account with lazy apply (https://lazyapply.com/) It will automatically apply you to 150 jobs a day based on the parameters you put in - sometimes, a spray and pray approach works best especially when you're sick of having to apply to jobs. The premium plan Doesn't seem too bad being a perpetual license. If it works that is. I've probably spent 10s of hours just the last couple months finding Js. Source: about 2 years ago
  • This seems so unrealistic...How do people "apply to 25 jobs a day" when job searching?
There are online tools like LazyApply that apply to hundreds of jobs on Indeed/LinkedIn for you automatically. This one in particular costs money, but it does a damn good job in my experience. Source: over 2 years ago
