OikoSearch is a free map of Switzerland that answers the question most tools avoid: once tax, rent and health insurance are paid, how much is actually left each month?

Cost-of-living sites give you an index or crowdsourced averages. OikoSearch estimates the monthly disposable income for a personalised household profile (income, family situation) across all 2,107 Swiss municipalities, on four concrete pillars:

Tax โ€” communal and cantonal rates from official scales (FTA/ESTV). Rent โ€” estimated rents by dwelling size (Federal Statistical Office). Health insurance โ€” actual LAMal reference premiums (FOPH). Quality of life โ€” 18 filterable criteria (transport, schools, healthcare, nature, shops), up to 44 shown per municipality. Every figure carries its source and year. When an official number isn't available, OikoSearch says so and flags the value as an estimate rather than inventing precision: the detailed cantonal tax bracket is currently verified for 4 cantons (~58% of the population), the rest use an explicitly signalled approximation.

Pick your profile and the map recolours to show where your money goes furthest, or compare candidate municipalities side by side. No account, no paywall, no tracking wall.

Built solo from public Swiss open data. Ideal for expats planning a move, residents weighing a relocation, and the FIRE community chasing financial breathing room in Switzerland.

Free. No signup. Available in French, English, German and Italian.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing OikoSearch and SimpleCipherText.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

OikoSearch's answer

Free public tool โ€” individual users across Switzerland (no enterprise customers)

What makes your product unique?

OikoSearch's answer

Most cost-of-living tools give you an index or crowdsourced averages. OikoSearch computes a personalised, municipality-level estimate of disposable income โ€” what's actually left after tax, the LAMal health premium and rent โ€” for all 2,107 Swiss municipalities, using only official government data. Its defining trait is radical transparency: every number is sourced and dated, and estimates are explicitly flagged rather than disguised as precision.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

OikoSearch's answer

Because it answers the real question โ€” "where can I actually afford to live in Switzerland?" โ€” rather than showing a generic index. It works at the municipal level (where the real gaps happen, not the cantonal average), it's built on official sources (FSO, FTA, FOPH, Swisstopo) instead of crowdsourced numbers, and it's honest about its limits. Free, no account, no tracking wall โ€” you can try it in seconds.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

OikoSearch's answer

People making a concrete relocation decision in Switzerland: newcomers and expats planning a move, residents weighing a change of municipality, and the FIRE / financial-independence community optimising purchasing power. Secondary: data journalists and civic-minded users interested in communal tax and cost-of-living disparities.

What's the story behind your product?

OikoSearch's answer

Built solo by a french developer in Switzerland, out of a simple observation: with the same salary, take-home money can differ by 2,000+ CHF/month depending on which municipality you live in โ€” yet no free tool made that visible at the municipal level. OikoSearch maps all 2,107 municipalities from official open data, with sources shown and estimates flagged, so anyone can see where their money goes furthest.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

OikoSearch's answer

Next.js (React, SSR/ISR) with TypeScript and TailwindCSS on the frontend; Leaflet + MapTiler for the interactive map; a Node.js/Express API backed by MongoDB. Hosted on Vercel (frontend) and Render (API). Privacy-friendly analytics via Umami (cookieless).
