Nota Backup & Restore is built specifically to work on low-resource shared hosting. Instead of trying to back up the whole site in one long request — which is where most backup plugins fail with timeouts or memory errors — it processes the backup in small chunks in the background. The chunk size is calculated automatically based on the server's available memory, so even large sites on cheap hosting plans complete their backups reliably.

Nota Backup & Restore was born out of frustration with backup plugins that fail exactly when you need them — large sites on shared hosting hitting timeouts mid-backup, leaving broken archives behind. We built a backup engine around chunked background processing from day one, so backups finish reliably regardless of hosting limits. It started as an internal tool for maintaining client sites and grew into a full product with scheduling, cloud storage, and encryption.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

PHP and the WordPress Plugin API, with JavaScript (jQuery) for the admin interface. It uses WordPress's native cron system for scheduled and background processing, ZipArchive for archive creation, MySQL for backup metadata, and integrates with cloud storage APIs (Google Drive, Amazon S3, Wasabi, Dropbox, OneDrive) plus FTP/SFTP via phpseclib.
