Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Nearly.family and Vim Python IDE.

What makes your product unique?

Nearly.family's answer

Nearly is unique because it introduces intentional, consent-based location sharing instead of constant tracking.

  • Privacy-first, no ads, no third-party trackers, no selling of your family's data
  • Tracking works only during configured active periods, not 24/7
  • Requires secure pairing between devices on the same network
  • Always visible to the child, no hidden monitoring

What's the story behind your product?

Nearly.family's answer

Bought an expensive kids smartwatch for school tracking. After a few months โ€” GPS degraded to cell tower location, kilometers off. Worst part: it started mixing my kid's location with other devices. Contacted the manufacturer directly, they "reset" it but it kept happening. Dead end.

Searched for a self-hosted solution. Found nothing usable. Tried Home Assistant's Find My integration โ€” didn't work at the time. Since I have previous experience with background location tracking - wrote a quick MQTT location sender. It worked.

Then wanted to have preferences like active hours, active days, smart rules and not redeploy each time. One feature led to another. That quick script got reworked and became Nearly.

For now, Nearly is only available on Android due to platform limitations on iOS regarding background services. Android allows the app to start tracking only when needed, without running continuously in the background.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Nearly.family's answer

  • Parents with children (ages ~6 till 18)

  • It can also be used by families who want to stay connected with and support elderly family members
