Bought an expensive kids smartwatch for school tracking. After a few months โ GPS degraded to cell tower location, kilometers off. Worst part: it started mixing my kid's location with other devices. Contacted the manufacturer directly, they "reset" it but it kept happening. Dead end.
Searched for a self-hosted solution. Found nothing usable. Tried Home Assistant's Find My integration โ didn't work at the time. Since I have previous experience with background location tracking - wrote a quick MQTT location sender. It worked.
Then wanted to have preferences like active hours, active days, smart rules and not redeploy each time. One feature led to another. That quick script got reworked and became Nearly.
For now, Nearly is only available on Android due to platform limitations on iOS regarding background services. Android allows the app to start tracking only when needed, without running continuously in the background.
