Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Moises and StemPlayer.

What makes your product unique?

StemPlayer's answer:

Six stems with dedicated guitar and piano channels, opened straight in a practice mixer in the browser. You do not get a zip of files to take somewhere else: you mute your part, slow the song down without changing the pitch, loop a section and play along, all in one place, with nothing to install.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

StemPlayer's answer:

Moises and LALAL.AI are subscriptions and cap free use hard; Ultimate Vocal Remover is free but needs installing and a good graphics card. StemPlayer runs in any browser, on a laptop or a phone, is free while in beta, and is built for playing along rather than producing.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

StemPlayer's answer:

Musicians who learn and practise songs by ear: guitarists, bass players and drummers who want to play their part with the real band, singers who need an instrumental, and teachers preparing play-along tracks for students.

What's the story behind your product?

StemPlayer's answer:

I am a gigging guitarist, and learning a part from a record always meant fighting the original guitar in the mix. Stem separation fixed that, but every tool either charged monthly, stopped at four stems, or dumped files I had to load into a DAW. I wanted to drop in a song, pull my part out and play. So I built StemPlayer for my own practice and opened it up for other musicians.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

StemPlayer's answer:

  • React and Vite for the browser app, hosted on Cloudflare Pages
  • Web Audio API for the mixer, with time-stretching so a slowed-down song keeps its pitch
  • Python and FastAPI for the backend
  • Demucs, a neural network for music source separation, running on a cloud GPU
  • Browser storage (IndexedDB) for the song library, so songs stay on your device

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

StemPlayer's answer:

  • StemPlayer is a free beta used by individual musicians: guitarists, bass players, drummers, singers and music teachers. It has no business customers.
