Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Mint and Zero.app.

What makes your product unique?

Zero.app's answer:

Zero combines zero-based budgeting with a local-first experience. It maintains a local copy of budget data on the device for fast reads and optimistic changes, while confirmed updates sync across devices. It requires no bank connection and supports manual tracking, YNAB, Actual Budget and CSV imports, targets, schedules, and safe-to-spend insights.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Zero.app's answer:

Choose Zero if you want the discipline of zero-based budgeting without connecting your bank or maintaining a self-hosted server. It provides a fast local-first interface, managed cross-device sync, manual transaction tracking, flexible imports, and a focused view of what is genuinely safe to spend.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Zero.app's answer:

Zero is designed for individuals who want intentional, hands-on control of their money without connecting a bank account. This includes zero-based budgeters, privacy-conscious users, people moving from YNAB, Actual Budget or spreadsheets, and users in regions where bank integrations are limited or unreliable.

What's the story behind your product?

Zero.app's answer:

Zero was built independently by Frail Bongat to make one budgeting principle practical: give every available amount a purpose and always know what is safe to spend. Instead of becoming another passive bank-connected dashboard, Zero was designed around intentional planning, manual control, and a responsive local-first experience.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Zero.app's answer:

Zero is built with Svelte 5, SvelteKit, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Rocicorp Zero for local-first synchronization, PostgreSQL with Drizzle ORM, Better Auth, and Vite with Workbox for its Progressive Web App. It also uses Polar for subscriptions and Sentry for monitoring.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Zero.app's answer:

  • Zero is an early-stage consumer product and does not publicly disclose named customers.
  • Its current users are individual budgeters and early adopters seeking manual, zero-based budgeting without bank connections.

A few budgeting platforms to check out. I've tried a couple of these and can vouch for the Intuit, YNAB, and Google Sheet but the others are just ones I found online. The important part is finding one that works for you. Source: almost 3 years ago

  • What do you use for asset tracking and why?
Mint - feel they were the original and the first. Investments were always broken for me, but think they still do a great job on the expenses side. Source: about 3 years ago
