MileStage is a stage-based project management and payment platform built specifically for freelancers who want to eliminate payment delays and scope creep. Instead of chasing invoices, freelancers structure their work into clearly defined stages that must be approved and paid before moving forward.

The platform combines milestone tracking, Stripe-powered direct payments, and a simple client portal into one streamlined workflow. Clients can view project stages, approve deliverables, make secure payments, request revisions, and purchase paid extensions, all in one place.

By locking each stage behind payment, MileStage ensures freelancers stay in control of their projects, protect their time, and get paid on schedule, without relying on complicated contracts or manual invoicing systems.

MileStage features and specs

  • Stage locking (stage-by-stage payments)
Locks progress so a client cannot move the project to the next stage until the current stage is paid and approved, prevents freelancers from getting stuck chasing payments and enforces delivery โ†’ payment flow.
  • Zero transaction fees (Stripe Connect direct payouts)
Clients pay via Stripe Checkout and funds go directly to the freelancerโ€™s connected Stripe account (MileStage charges no transaction fee; the product is subscription-based instead). Webhooks auto-update payment status and unlock the next stage.
  • Client portal & shareable project links
Each project can generate a share code / client portal URL so clients view stages, pay, leave notes / revision requests, and buy paid extensions, designed to keep freelancerโ†”client communication and payment actions in one place.
  • Paid Revision Extensions
Freelancers can attach optional paid extensions to a stage (e.g., extra revisions, scope add-ons). Clients can purchase them directly inside the project flow, preventing unpaid extra work and scope creep.
  • Client Quotes & Invoices
MileStage generates clean, professional quotes and invoices for every project stage automatically. Clients receive a clear breakdown of what they're paying for at each milestone, removing any ambiguity around cost and scope. Every payment record is documented and accessible to both sides throughout the project.

Nullstack features and specs

  • Full-Stack Capabilities
Nullstack allows for the development of both client-side and server-side functionalities within a single project, providing a more unified development process.
  • Seamless SSR
It offers built-in support for server-side rendering, improving performance and SEO without the need for complex configurations.
  • Zero tooling
Nullstack provides a setup that requires minimal configuration and does not depend heavily on additional tools, simplifying the development workflow.
  • Component-based Architecture
Promotes the use of components, encouraging modularity and reusability of code, which can improve maintainability and scalability of applications.
  • Hot Module Replacement
Supports HMR, allowing developers to see immediate changes in their applications without refreshing the entire page, improving development efficiency.

Possible disadvantages of Nullstack

  • Smaller Community
Compared to more established frameworks, Nullstack has a smaller community, which can result in fewer resources and third-party tools.
  • Learning Curve
Developers need to learn the Nullstack-specific ways of handling both front-end and back-end development, which might be a hurdle for those accustomed to other frameworks.
  • Limited Ecosystem
Due to its newer and less widely adopted nature, there might be limited third-party libraries and plugins readily available compared to more mature frameworks.
  • Rapidly Evolving
Being relatively new and possibly evolving quickly, developers might face breaking changes more frequently compared to more established technologies.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing MileStage and Nullstack.

What's the story behind your product?

MileStage's answer

I'm a UI/UX designer who got burned too many times by late payments and scope creep. I wanted a tool that enforced boundaries for me so I didn't have to be the bad guy with clients. Couldn't find one that was simple enough, so I built it myself using AI tools despite having no coding background.

What makes your product unique?

MileStage's answer

Stage-based payment enforcement. Unlike invoicing tools where you bill after the work is done, MileStage locks each project stage until the previous one is paid. The system enforces payment boundaries automatically - no awkward conversations, no scope creep. Plus zero transaction fees since payments go directly to your Stripe account.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

MileStage's answer

Freelancers who work in milestones - designers, developers, content creators, photographers, consultants. Anyone who delivers work in phases and has dealt with clients delaying payments or quietly expanding scope. Especially appeals to solo freelancers who want something dead simple without the complexity of all-in-one platforms.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

MileStage's answer

React and TypeScript for the frontend, Supabase for database and authentication, Stripe Connect for payments, Vercel for hosting, and Resend for email notifications.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

MileStage's answer

We're early stage and focused on individual freelancers rather than big names. Currently onboarding beta users and gathering feedback to refine the product before scaling up.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

MileStage's answer

Most freelance tools try to do everything - contracts, invoicing, scheduling, CRM, time tracking. They're powerful but overwhelming, and most freelancers end up using 20% of the features while paying for 100%. MileStage does one thing well: stage-based payment tracking with automatic enforcement. Client can't move forward until they pay. No manual chasing, no awkward follow-ups.

The other big difference is cost. Some platforms take 2-3% of every transaction. MileStage charges a flat monthly fee with zero transaction fees - payments go straight to your Stripe account. If you're billing $5k+ per month, that savings adds up fast. If you want an all-in-one business suite, MileStage isn't for you. But if you just want to stop doing free work and get paid on time without managing another complicated tool, that's exactly what it's built for.
