  • Huff gravity-model market share
market share for captured, contested and cannibalized demand
  • Intuitive Isochrone Mapping
Smappen excels at creating drive-time and walk-time isochrone maps, making it easy to visualize catchment areas and understand how far people can travel within a given time frame. This is particularly useful for retail, real estate, and logistics planning.
  • User-Friendly Interface
The platform features a clean, intuitive interface that doesn't require technical GIS expertise. Users can quickly generate maps, analyze areas, and extract insights without a steep learning curve, making it accessible to marketing teams, business analysts, and non-technical users.
  • Demographic and POI Data Integration
Smappen provides access to demographic data and points of interest (POI) within defined areas, allowing users to assess population statistics, business density, and other relevant data to support location-based decision-making.
  • Collaboration and Sharing Features
Users can easily share maps and analyses with team members or stakeholders via links or exports. This makes it convenient for collaborative projects involving site selection, territory planning, or market analysis.
  • Multiple Transportation Modes
The tool supports various transportation modes including driving, walking, and cycling for isochrone calculations, giving users flexibility to analyze accessibility based on different travel methods relevant to their specific use case.

Possible disadvantages

  • Limited Free Plan
The free tier of Smappen is quite restricted in terms of the number of searches, areas, and data exports allowed. Users who need to perform frequent or large-scale analyses will quickly find themselves needing to upgrade to a paid plan.
  • Geographic Data Coverage Gaps
While Smappen covers many countries, the depth and accuracy of demographic and POI data can vary significantly by region. Users outside of well-covered markets like France or the US may find the available data less comprehensive or less reliable.
  • Limited Advanced Analytics
Compared to full-featured GIS platforms like ArcGIS or QGIS, Smappen lacks advanced spatial analysis tools, custom data layering, and complex modeling capabilities. Power users may find it insufficient for sophisticated geospatial workflows.
  • Pricing Can Be Expensive for Small Businesses
The paid plans can become costly, especially for small businesses or startups that need access to higher data volumes or advanced features. The pricing structure may not scale well for users with moderate but recurring needs.
  • Limited Data Export Options
While Smappen allows some data export, the formats and level of detail available for export can be limiting. Users who need to integrate Smappen data deeply into other tools or databases may find the export functionality insufficient for their workflows.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing MapBees and Smappen.

What makes your product unique?

MapBees's answer

Two things. You can just ask it. Type "where should I open a café?" and Scout Bee, the built-in map agent, answers with an actual map — naming the formula it picked and why, in plain words, with an undo on the next tap. And every map is a real, named method, not an unnamed score: Location Quotient, Getis-Ord Gi* hot spots, gap analysis, Simpson/Shannon variety, a 3x3 bivariate cross. Each has plain-word controls with the field's own term beside it. Even how the colours are cut is stated out loud, because where the breaks go is a claim about the data. Click any tile and the exact breakdown behind its number opens — nothing is a black box.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

MapBees's answer

Anyone making a location decision without a GIS team or an enterprise budget. In practice that's small business owners choosing where to open, franchise and sales teams splitting territory, retail and site-selection analysts shortlisting blocks, marketers matching a neighborhood to an audience, event planners, researchers and urban planners — and renters and movers screening neighborhoods for walkability, transit and amenities.

Secondary audience: analysts who already know what a location quotient or a Gi* hot spot is, and want one run on open data in seconds rather than an afternoon.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

MapBees's answer

Because of what you have to bring. Enterprise site-selection suites are powerful and gated — a demo, a licence, a seat cost — before you can look at one block. Desktop GIS is free but expects you to bring your own data, know which method you want, and set it up. Data vendors sell you data, not an answer.

MapBees has the city already loaded, the methods already named, and an agent that will set one up for you if you'd rather describe the question than build it. Every number is explainable and every map is a shareable link that reopens the exact same analysis. There's a real Free Tier, so you can check whether it answers your question before anyone asks you for a card.
