Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Magic Thumbnails and ThumbnailMaker.so.

What makes your product unique?

ThumbnailMaker.so's answer:

It turns a sentence into a finished 1280×720 YouTube thumbnail, then lets you fix it by instruction instead of rerolling.

That correction loop is the difference. When a result is 90% right, most AI tools make you regenerate and lose the good 90% along with the bad 10%. Here you type "make the text bigger" and only that changes.

It also keeps the bottom-right 15% clear for YouTube's duration badge, and shows the result at feed size — which is where thumbnails actually fail.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

ThumbnailMaker.so's answer:

The competitors here are two different kinds of product, so there are two answers.

Canva, Adobe Express, PicMonkey and Photoshop are editors: they hand you a canvas and you do the design work. Right choice when you want control over every pixel. Wrong one when the video is already rendered and you just need a thumbnail.

Midjourney makes better images than we do. It also doesn't know what a thumbnail is — it won't spell your four words reliably, won't leave room for the duration badge, and can't be told "make the text bigger" without regenerating the whole frame.

We do 1280×720 and 9:16, for YouTube, with a correction loop. Nothing else.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

ThumbnailMaker.so's answer:

YouTube creators who publish often and aren't designers — gaming, faceless and automation channels, tutorials, reviews, Shorts. One to five videos a week, where the thumbnail is a recurring chore rather than a creative project.

Poor fit for anyone who wants pixel-level layout control or shared brand templates. That's what Canva and Adobe Express are for.

What's the story behind your product?

ThumbnailMaker.so's answer:

General AI image tools produce a recognisable kind of bad thumbnail, and they produce it by default: airbrushed skin, waxy light, text with a letter missing. That isn't a model limitation — it's what you get unless the prompt explicitly fights it, and almost no tool does that work for you.

Built by one person, Aymane Senhaji, after generating and grading thousands of AI thumbnails by hand to find which instructions actually change the output and which do nothing. Those findings sit in the system prompt.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

ThumbnailMaker.so's answer:

  • Next.js 15 (App Router, React 19, TypeScript) on Vercel
  • Google Gemini image models, with retry-and-backoff and a fallback to a second model
  • Supabase — Postgres with row-level security, auth, thumbnail storage
  • Polar as merchant of record
  • Tailwind CSS with Base UI
  • Resend, Sentry, PostHog (gated behind cookie consent)

Credits are only charged once a generation actually succeeds — the retry and the fallback both happen before you're billed.
