Ironstead is a coaching platform built specifically for strength sports: powerlifting, strongman and bodybuilding.

For athletes (free): - Track workouts live in the gym: sets, weight, reps, RPE or RIR - Offline-first: works in basement gyms with no signal, syncs later - Full training history and progress views per exercise - Personal single-day templates and an exercise library with 300+ movements - Nutrition tracking included

For coaches (pay per athlete): - Manage your whole roster in one place - Build multi-week training blocks and assign them to athletes - Review sessions and progress as your athletes train - Your programming stays yours: Ironstead never prescribes exercises or plans, it gives your coaching a better delivery system

Ironstead is a platform that connects coaches with their athletes. It does not sell coaching itself. Solo athletes can use it as a free workout tracker; a coach connection can be added at any time.

Available as a web app, on Android and on iOS. Built by a solo developer who competes in strongman.

MacroFactor features and specs

  • Adaptive Nutrition Coaching
MacroFactor uses a sophisticated algorithm that continuously adjusts your calorie and macro targets based on your actual weight trend and intake data, rather than relying on static estimates. This means your nutrition plan evolves with you over time for more accurate results.
  • Comprehensive Food Database
The app features a large, verified food database with over 1.4 million entries, making it easy to log meals accurately. It also supports barcode scanning and custom food/recipe creation for convenient tracking.
  • Flexible Dietary Approaches
MacroFactor supports a wide range of dietary styles and goal types, including collaborative mode (where it sets macros for you), coached mode, and manual mode. Users can customize macro ratios, set different targets for different days, and adjust goals easily.
  • Clean, Ad-Free Experience
The app is completely free of advertisements, which provides a clean and distraction-free user experience. The business model is subscription-based, so users are treated as customers rather than products.
  • Expenditure Tracking and Analytics
MacroFactor calculates your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) based on your real-world data rather than generic formulas. It provides detailed analytics dashboards showing trends in weight, nutrition, and expenditure over time, giving users deep insight into their progress.

Possible disadvantages of MacroFactor

  • Subscription Cost
MacroFactor requires a paid subscription to use (after a free trial period), which can feel expensive compared to free calorie-tracking apps like MyFitnessPal or Cronometer's free tier. This may be a barrier for budget-conscious users.
  • Learning Curve
The app's advanced features, multiple coaching modes, and detailed analytics can be overwhelming for beginners or those who just want simple calorie counting. It takes time to understand how the algorithm works and how to best use the various settings.
  • No Free Tier
Unlike some competitors that offer a functional free version with optional premium upgrades, MacroFactor does not have a permanent free tier. Once the trial expires, users must subscribe or lose access entirely.
  • Limited Social and Community Features
MacroFactor focuses heavily on individual tracking and coaching but lacks built-in social features like friend challenges, community forums, or sharing capabilities that some users find motivating in other fitness apps.
  • Requires Consistent Logging for Best Results
The adaptive algorithm depends on consistent and accurate food logging and regular weigh-ins to function optimally. If users log sporadically or inaccurately, the algorithm's recommendations become less reliable, which can frustrate inconsistent trackers.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing MacroFactor and Ironstead.

What makes your product unique?

Ironstead's answer:

Ironstead is built for strength sports, not generic fitness.

  • Athletes log the way strength training actually works: RPE and RIR, rep ranges, multi-week blocks
  • Offline-first: works in a basement gym with no signal, syncs later
  • The coach-athlete relationship is the core of the product, not an add-on
  • The coach's programming always stays the coach's own: Ironstead never prescribes exercises or plans

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Ironstead's answer:

Most coaching platforms charge coaches high flat fees and treat athletes as an afterthought. Most workout trackers have no real coach side at all. Ironstead does both in one product:

  • A full free tracker for athletes
  • Per-athlete pricing for coaches, so you only pay for athletes you actually coach
  • Strength-specific depth: e1RM trends, a muscle-volume body map, AI review of training blocks against the coach's own rules, and built-in coach chat

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Ironstead's answer:

  • Coaches in powerlifting, strongman and bodybuilding who program for remote or in-person athletes
  • Their athletes, who train free
  • Solo strength athletes who want a serious free tracker and the option to connect a coach later

What's the story behind your product?

Ironstead's answer:

Ironstead started with a PDF. Its founder, a solo developer from Germany who competes in strongman, got his training plans from his own coach, a professional strongman coach and former World's Strongest Man athlete, as PDF files: every few weeks a new document, results typed back in a spreadsheet or a chat message.

That workflow is how a lot of serious 1:1 coaching still runs today. So he built the platform to replace it: the coach builds the block once, the athlete gets it in the app, logs every set with RPE right at the barbell, and the coach sees the results without anyone shuffling files around.
