Desktop, free, open source. Logisim Evolution is the default answer in most university courses โ GPL-3.0, Java, 7.5k stars, and still actively developed (v4.1.0 landed in February 2026). Digital by Helmut Neemann is the connoisseur's pick: GPL-3.0, 5.9k stars, and in several areas โ test cases, circuit analysis, hardware export โ genuinely ahead of Logisim. Logisim is a nice FOSS software in this space as well. I've designed a CPU in it during COVID, which then became a never-finished breadboard project that stilll looks at me accusingly from some corner of my living room. Oh well. In addition to boolean logic, Logisim also includes more advanced components such as static RAM, as well as interesting things to drive with it, such as displays. Creating a etc/virtual file is ignored in .gitignore, so I guess it is made to be used with local packages. Using depends="virtual?java-runtime-17.0.5+7_1" works, as OpenJDK 17 provides that exact version... Source: over 3 years ago
