Local Waifu is newly launched, so instead of named customers, here's who it's built for:

• Mac users who want a private AI companion that runs entirely on-device
• People tired of monthly AI subscriptions who prefer a one-time purchase
• Privacy-conscious users who don't want their conversations sent to the cloud
• Anime and waifu fans who want a personalized character that remembers them

Two groups, with some overlap.

The first is the local AI crowd. People already running models on their own machines, active in places like r/LocalLLaMA and r/SillyTavernAI. They know what VRAM is and they have opinions about quantization. They came for privacy and control.

The second is people who want an AI companion but are uncomfortable with the idea that every conversation sits on a company server. They are not technical, they just do not want their private chats stored somewhere.

Mostly Windows and Mac desktop users who own hardware good enough to run a model locally, which in practice means a discrete GPU or Apple Silicon.

Three reasons people actually give me:

Privacy that is structural, not a promise in a policy page. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can be logged, trained on, or leaked. One payment instead of a subscription. Companion apps charge $10 to $20 a month for something you use daily. That adds up fast for a product you are supposed to keep using for years. It works offline. Plane, bad wifi, ISP outage, does not matter.

The honest trade-off: you need decent hardware, and setup is heavier than opening a browser tab. If you want the fastest possible model and do not care where your data goes, a cloud app will beat this. If you care where your data goes, there are not many alternatives.

Local Waifu runs the model on your own machine. There is no server in the middle, no API key, no account. Your conversations never leave your computer, because there is nowhere for them to go.

The second difference is the pricing. You buy it once and you own that version. No monthly fee, no token credits, no usage meter running in the background while you talk.

Most AI companion apps are a web frontend over someone else's API. This one is an actual desktop app for macOS and Windows.

I build software solo and I kept noticing the same pattern in AI companion apps: every one of them sends your most personal conversations to a server you do not control, and charges you monthly for the privilege.

That felt backwards. The conversations people have with a companion app are more private than their email, and the whole category treats them as training data.

Local models had also gotten good enough by then to run on normal consumer hardware. So the technical excuse for cloud-only was gone. I built the version I wanted to exist: runs on your machine, costs one payment, and nobody sees what you type.

It has been in the wild for a while now on macOS and Windows, with a Discord where users tell me directly what breaks.

Local inference runs through [np. llama.cpp / MLX / Ollama], with GPU acceleration via Metal on Apple Silicon and CUDA on NVIDIA cards. Payments and licensing are handled by Dodo Payments. Distribution goes through the Mac App Store, itch.io and direct download.
