Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

Lightpanda 5 features
Cockroach Browser 5 features
  • Very low memory footprint
Lightpanda is a headless browser built from scratch in Zig rather than a Chromium fork, and it uses far less memory than Chrome headless. The project claims roughly 9x lower memory usage, which lets you run many more concurrent instances on the same hardware.
  • Fast execution and startup
Because it skips rendering and graphical components, Lightpanda starts almost instantly and executes pages much faster than Chrome-based headless browsers. The project claims up to about 11x faster performance. This helps with high-volume scraping and automation.
  • Designed for automation and AI agents
It is purpose-built for machine use cases such as web scraping, data extraction, testing, and LLM/AI agent workflows. It does not carry the overhead of a full consumer browser, so it suits these workloads well.
  • Compatible with existing tooling via CDP
Lightpanda exposes a Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) server. Popular tools like Puppeteer, Playwright, and chromedp can connect to it with little change to existing scripts, which lowers the cost of adopting or switching.
  • Open source with a cloud option
The core browser is open source under AGPL-3.0, so you can inspect, self-host, and contribute to it. A managed cloud offering is also available for teams that don't want to run their own infrastructure.

Possible disadvantages

  • Beta-stage maturity
The project is still in beta and under active development. You may run into bugs, crashes, or unstable behavior, which makes it riskier for production-critical workloads than mature browsers.
  • Incomplete Web API coverage
Because it is a from-scratch implementation, not every Web API is supported yet. Complex or JavaScript-heavy sites may fail to load or behave incorrectly, and some pages that work in Chrome will not work here.
  • No rendering or visual features
Lightpanda has no graphical rendering, so it cannot take screenshots, run visual regression tests, or support anything that depends on layout and painting. That limits it to non-visual use cases.
  • Playwright/Puppeteer compatibility gaps
Although it supports CDP, its implementation is not complete. Some Playwright or Puppeteer features may not work, and updates to those libraries can break compatibility, which can require workarounds.
  • AGPL licensing and a small ecosystem
The AGPL-3.0 license may be a concern for companies that want to embed or modify it in proprietary products. As a young project, it also has a smaller community, fewer resources, and less third-party support than Chromium-based options.
  • Distributed SQL Compatibility
CockroachDB Browser tools are designed to work seamlessly with CockroachDB's distributed SQL architecture, allowing users to visually explore and manage data across multiple nodes and regions without needing to write complex queries manually.
  • User-Friendly Interface
The browser typically provides a graphical interface for database management, making it easier for developers and DBAs who may not be as comfortable with command-line tools to navigate schemas, run queries, and view table structures.
  • Real-Time Data Visualization
Users can often view live data changes and cluster performance metrics through the browser, which helps in monitoring the health and behavior of the distributed database in real time.
  • Simplified Schema Management
The tool generally allows for easy creation, alteration, and deletion of database schemas and tables through a visual editor, reducing the need for manual SQL scripting for basic administrative tasks.
  • Cross-Platform Accessibility
Being a browser-based tool, it can typically be accessed from any device with a web browser and internet connection, providing flexibility for remote database management without needing to install specific desktop software.

Possible disadvantages

  • Limited Advanced Functionality
Browser-based database tools often lack the depth of features found in dedicated command-line interfaces or specialized enterprise software, potentially limiting complex query optimization or advanced administrative tasks.
  • Performance Overhead
Running database management tasks through a web browser can introduce latency or performance overhead compared to native applications, especially when dealing with large datasets or complex distributed queries.
  • Security Concerns
Web-based access to sensitive database information may pose additional security risks, requiring robust authentication and encryption measures to prevent unauthorized access or data breaches.
  • Dependency on Internet Connectivity
Since it is a browser-based tool, consistent and reliable internet access is required to manage the database effectively, which could be a limitation in environments with unstable connections.
  • Learning Curve for Distributed Systems
While the interface may be user-friendly, understanding the underlying distributed nature of CockroachDB and interpreting the visualized data correctly still requires some technical knowledge, which can be challenging for beginners.
