GrandSpeed goes far beyond the traditional speed test tools which usually only test upload/download speeds. GrandSpeed tests for these and also checks the idle latency, loaded latency (latency while other activities are happening), jitter, packet loss, bufferbloat. Amazingly, GrandSpeed also automatically determines the maximum video resolution that you can watch as well as maximum video resolution at which you can livestream on your internet!. What is more, GrandSpeed also automatically provides an indication of the degree of suitability of your connection for gaming and audio/video calling or conferencing, based on the measured upload speed, latencies and packet loss. Furthermore, the tool also indicates how much data you can download in an hour and also in 24 hours over your connection, which is useful when planning to bulk download files. There is also a Speed Budget calculator to help you determine the minimum internet service that you should subscribe to, based on the variety of devices on your network. In short, this is simply the best internet quality assessment tool on the planet.

What's the story behind your product?

GrandSpeed's answer:

GrandSpeed came about as a result of difficulties we were experiencing with getting smooth video livestreams and we could not find any tool that provides useful information regarding the suitability of the often unstable internet connection that we were using for livestreaming video. hence, we decided to come up with a tool for this purpose. However, this tool is useful for many other purposes including gaming, VoIP calls etc.

  • Ask HN: Is Comcast ripping me off and how can I prove it?
Try hosting a DIY speed test on a cloud server (like Google colab or the free oracle instances or whatever): https://github.com/librespeed/speedtest. - Source: Hacker News / about 3 years ago
  • SSLVPN - Fluctuating bandwith
It should be DIA. They provide the internet connection to the company since 2 decades and it's a very small ISP, so it's very vague in terms of contract. Iperf was giving me very terrible results with TCP, UDP was giving me a couple of Gbit/s throughput, definitely a wrong result. We are using this self hosted speedtest. All my results above are based on this software: Https://github.com/librespeed/speedtest. Source: over 3 years ago
  • Speedtests
Put a copy of Librespeed on a web server that's accessible through the VPN and told them to use that. For (our) convenience, it's logged into a database that's correlated with the VPN login/logout times so the users don't even need to log in to use it, but we still know whose test result it is. • Fooling My ISP
There is a selfhosted solution for speed testing called LibreSpeed. You could try it and see the results. Source: over 3 years ago
  • How much are you 'trusting' a docker image from hub.docker.com?
In this particular instance though, adolfintel appears to be the developer of Librespeed. The official documentation in that GitHub repo points to that docker image by adolfintel. Therefore, it counts as the official docker image in my book. Source: over 3 years ago
