Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing knob.monster and Diffyn.

What makes your product unique?

knob.monster's answer

knob.monster is the first browser-native SysEx librarian for vintage synthesizers. No desktop install, no drivers, no MIDI-OX buffer tuning.

  • Connects to hardware over the Web MIDI API in Chrome or Edge
  • Byte-perfect backup and restore of SysEx dumps
  • Searchable cloud library with dedicated patch-name parsers (DX7, Juno-106, M1, and more)
  • Lifetime pricing instead of abandoned desktop tools or $200+ librarian suites
  • Transfer pacing built for 8-bit synth CPUs, not modern USB firehoses

Think iCloud for your DX7, not another Windows 95 utility.

Diffyn's answer:

Addresses workflow and change management on LLM prompts, provide teams with traceability and visualization of tests across multiple models, provide deeper understading into efficiency of these prompts.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

knob.monster's answer

  • Zero install, auto buffer pacing, no TLS/security baggage on ancient sites
  • Works on any Chromium browser; cloud search across all banks
  • $39–$399 one-time vs hundreds; no app sprawl

Choose knob.monster if you:

  • Want backup in 5 minutes without a VM or old laptop
  • Need searchable patch names, not a folder of mystery .syx files
  • Hate subscriptions for a tool that should outlive your synth
  • Stick with desktop tools if you need deep editors for every obscure machine and already live inside MIDI Quest daily.

Diffyn's answer:

Diffyn is the platform that specializes on both change management and multi-model analysis.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

knob.monster's answer

  • Backend: Python, FastAPI, Jinja2, PostgreSQL
  • Frontend: HTMX, Tailwind CSS, vanilla JavaScript
  • Hardware bridge: Web MIDI API (Chrome, Edge, Opera)
  • Payments: Stripe (one-time checkout)
  • Analytics & errors: PostHog, OpenTelemetry
  • Hosting: Vercel
  • Auth: bcrypt, signed session cookies

No Electron. No native drivers. The browser is the app.

Diffyn's answer:

React, Next.js, POSTGRESQL

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

knob.monster's answer

  • Vintage synth owners (1–5+ boards): DX7, Juno-106, M1, JV1080, Prophet, Casio CZ, etc.
  • Collectors and gear-room hobbyists worried about battery death and lost patches
  • Bedroom producers who want hardware backups without maintaining a SysEx workflow
  • Repair shops and rental studios (Studio tier) snapshotting client or fleet machines before service or rental
  • Not plugin-only producers; you need physical MIDI hardware to get value

First-party survey (n=61): ~48% dedicated gear rooms, ~41% bedroom studios, ~12% commercial/repair.

Diffyn's answer:

Professionals incorporating LLMs or AI tools in their workflow and wants to keep track of changes and test their prompts.

What's the story behind your product?

knob.monster's answer

Vintage synths last decades. The tools to back them up did not. MIDI-OX has not moved on. Mac librarians are siloed. Batteries still die.

Diffyn's answer:

I started working on Diffyn when I notice that prompting has become an essential part of work across many industries. While there are version control platofrms like github, they are not designed for just prompt management are can be overkill such applications, it is also not integrated natively with various LLMs and relevant tools for users to validate ideas and visualise results properly.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

knob.monster's answer

  • Independent vintage synth collectors (primary Personal tier buyers)
  • Bedroom studio owners backing up Yamaha, Roland, and Korg hardware rigs
  • Gearspace and Discord community members who adopted during open beta
  • Early software-engineer beta partners testing Prophet, JV1080, and Triton dumps (names private)
  • Commercial repair and rental studios evaluating Studio tier (early outreach; no public logo wall yet)
