  • Free
KeePass is completely free to use. There are no subscription fees or one-time purchase costs, making it accessible to everyone.
  • Strong Encryption
KeePass uses strong encryption algorithms (AES-256, ChaCha20) to securely store passwords, making it very difficult for unauthorized users to access the stored data.
  • Cross-platform Availability
KeePass supports multiple operating systems including Windows, macOS, Linux, and has a variety of compatible third-party apps for mobile platforms like Android and iOS.
  • Offline Storage
KeePass stores the password database locally on your device rather than in the cloud, reducing the risk of remote hacks or breaches.
  • Customizable
KeePass offers a high degree of customization through plugins and extensions, allowing users to tailor its functionality to their specific needs.
  • Portable
KeePass can be run from a USB stick without installation, making it a portable option for users who need password management on the go.

Possible disadvantages of KeePass

  • User Interface
The user interface of KeePass is considered by some to be outdated and not as intuitive as more modern password managers.
  • Manual Syncing
KeePass does not have built-in cloud synchronization, requiring users to manually sync their password database across multiple devices.
  • Learning Curve
Being a highly customizable tool with various features, KeePass can have a steep learning curve for new users who are not tech-savvy.
  • No Native Mobile Apps
While there are third-party apps available for mobile devices, KeePass does not offer official mobile applications, which may lead to inconsistencies in user experience.
  • Limited Customer Support
As an open-source project, KeePass does not offer professional customer support. Users must rely on community forums and documentation for help.
  • Reliance on Plugins
Many advanced features require the use of third-party plugins, which may vary in quality and security, potentially introducing risks.

Trashbox features and specs

Trashbox provides free temporary email addresses, allowing users to receive emails without paying anything, which is ideal for one-time signups and protecting your primary inbox.
  • Privacy protection
By using a disposable email address, users can avoid sharing their real email address with websites, reducing spam, phishing risks, and unwanted marketing emails in their primary inbox.
  • No registration required
Trashbox typically allows users to start using a temporary email address immediately without needing to create an account or provide personal information, making it quick and hassle-free.
  • Simple and easy to use
The service offers a straightforward, minimalist interface that makes it easy for anyone to generate a temporary email address and check incoming messages without technical knowledge.
  • Helps avoid spam
Using Trashbox for signups on untrusted websites or services helps keep your real email address clean and free from spam and unwanted newsletters.

Possible disadvantages of Trashbox

  • Temporary inbox lifespan
Emails received on Trashbox are temporary and will be deleted after a certain period, meaning users cannot rely on it for long-term email storage or important communications.
  • No sending capability
Disposable email services like Trashbox are typically receive-only, meaning users cannot send outgoing emails, limiting its functionality compared to regular email providers.
  • Blocked by some services
Many websites and online services actively block or reject disposable email domains like Trashbox, preventing users from signing up with temporary addresses.
  • Security concerns
Temporary email inboxes are often publicly accessible or lack strong security measures, meaning sensitive information received there could potentially be viewed by others who know or guess the address.
  • Not suitable for account recovery
Since the email address and its messages are temporary, users cannot use Trashbox for account recovery purposes, password resets, or any service that requires a persistent email address.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing KeePass and Trashbox.

What's the story behind your product?

Trashbox's answer:

I got tired of existing temp mail services being slow, ad-heavy, and sketchy with user data. So I built one from scratch โ€” a fast, privacy-first disposable email service with a clean UI, no tracking, and real security features like HTML sanitization and automatic deletion. It started as a personal tool and grew into a full product available in 20 languages.

What makes your product unique?

Trashbox's answer:

Trashbox focuses on three things most temp mail services ignore: automatic OTP detection that highlights verification codes for one-click copy, server-side HTML sanitization that strips scripts and tracking pixels before emails reach your browser, and full multi-language support across 20 languages. No registration, no captcha, no personal data collected.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Trashbox's answer:

Most temp mail services are cluttered with intrusive ads, slow to load, and don't care about security. Trashbox delivers a clean inbox experience with instant email generation, custom aliases, attachment support, and dark mode โ€” all on a fast static frontend powered by Astro and Cloudflare's global CDN. Your inbox is ready in under a second.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Trashbox's answer:

Anyone who values their inbox privacy. Developers testing email flows, privacy-conscious users avoiding spam from one-time signups, people accessing free trials or gated content, and anyone who doesn't want to hand over their real email to unknown websites.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Trashbox's answer:

Astro with React islands for the frontend, deployed on Cloudflare for global edge performance. Haraka as the SMTP email server, Redis for caching, and PostHog for privacy-friendly analytics. Everything runs over HTTPS with HSTS preload.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Trashbox's answer:

Trashbox is a free public service โ€” no enterprise customers or paid accounts. It serves individual users worldwide who need quick, anonymous disposable email addresses for everyday privacy protection.

The key difference here being that this is two way hashing so passwords can be decrypted. In reality, there are a lot of attack vectors like MITM, event logging or sometimes straight up storing data in plaintext. Through these hackers can generally get passwords of all users of these services. So, why don't people use local password managers?
