Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing JavaScript.com and Peek a Name.

What makes your product unique?

Peek a Name's answer:

Peek a Name (https://peekaname.com) is the only fully free, no-signup baby name explorer that surfaces the complete 145 years of U.S. Social Security Administration data — every one of 117,146 unique names with year-by-year and state-by-state popularity. Most baby-name sites either paywall the deep history, hide it behind a quiz, or only show top-1000 lists. We show the long tail: even names that peaked once in 1907 in Wyoming have a page (try https://peekaname.com/random for a random one). On top of the raw data we also ship 11 free interactive tools — a tournament-style name bracket, an age guesser, a sibling finder, an era matcher, a trend predictor, and more — at https://peekaname.com/tools/.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Peek a Name's answer:

Three reasons. (1) Coverage: 145 years and all 50 states + territories vs. competitors that show top-1000 only or stop at the national rollup. See https://peekaname.com/states for the full state breakdown. (2) Tools: nine genuinely useful interactive tools — try https://peekaname.com/tools/age-guesser to guess someone's age from their name, https://peekaname.com/tools/siblings to find names that go well together, or https://peekaname.com/tools/bracket to run a tournament between your favorites. (3) Speed: every page loads in <100 ms because the data is local SQLite, not a third-party API. Free, no signup, no popups.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Peek a Name's answer:

Mostly expecting parents trying to settle on a name and curious people who want to see how their own name has trended. We also see writers and screenwriters checking name plausibility for a character set in a specific year (https://peekaname.com/year/1923 if your novel is set then), genealogists tracing rare names, and data nerds who like the trend visualizations at https://peekaname.com/trends. Educators occasionally use https://peekaname.com/decade/1920 to teach kids about generational naming patterns.

What's the story behind your product?

Peek a Name's answer:

My wife and I were name-hunting and ended up with 12 browser tabs open across different baby-name sites — every one of them paywalled the actually-interesting data behind a subscription, locked the regional breakdowns, or capped at top-1000 lists. The U.S. Social Security Administration releases the entire dataset for free, so I built https://peekaname.com to surface it cleanly: every name, every year, every state. Once we had the data loaded, the fun tools just kept following — https://peekaname.com/tools/era-matcher, https://peekaname.com/tools/predictor, https://peekaname.com/tools/compatibility, etc.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Peek a Name's answer:

https://peekaname.com runs on Astro 5 (SSR via @astrojs/node middleware mode) with a Hono API in the same Node.js process. Data layer is Drizzle ORM over better-sqlite3 — the entire 8.7M-row name dataset lives in a single 810 MB SQLite file in WAL mode, which keeps queries under 10 ms. Tailwind CSS 4 for styling. Everything runs in a single Docker container (300 MB memory limit) on a $6 VPS, fronted by Cloudflare for TLS, CDN, and bot mitigation. Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Peek a Name's answer:

https://peekaname.com is 100% free and has no customers in the SaaS sense. The audience is expecting parents, name-curious people, writers, and genealogists. The closest thing to a "customer relationship" is people sharing the link to specific name pages with friends and family during pregnancy.
