Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing JavaScript.com and ElfNames.wiki.

What makes your product unique?

ElfNames.wiki's answer:

Elf Names Wiki generates names by subrace instead of drawing from one generic "fantasy" pool. It covers 11 elf subraces — Wood Elf, Dark Elf, High Elf, Drow, Half-Elf, Sea Elf, Snow Elf, Night Elf, Blood Elf, Christmas Elf and Skyrim elves — and each one follows its own phonetic rules, so a Drow name does not come out sounding like a Wood Elf one.

  • Every name comes with its meaning and a pronunciation guide, not just the syllables.
  • You can pin the opening letters, the syllable count, the meaning the name should carry, or a family name to match.
  • If you would rather pick than roll, there are 1,278 hand-written names to browse by subrace, gender and theme.
  • Lore pages explain how elven names are built in D&D, The Lord of the Rings and The Elder Scrolls.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

ElfNames.wiki's answer:

Choose it if you need a name that fits a specific elf culture, and you want to know what it means and how to say it.

  • Names are built from the naming conventions of each subrace, so the result sounds like it belongs to that culture.
  • Meaning and pronunciation come with every name, so you do not have to invent them afterwards for a character sheet or a story.
  • It is both a generator and a reference: roll new names, or pick from 1,278 hand-written ones.
  • Generating names, the name lists and the lore pages are free and need no account. The only paid product is an optional elf character card ($2.99 for one, $6.99 for three).

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

ElfNames.wiki's answer:

Anyone who needs an elf name:

  • Tabletop players naming a new D&D character
  • Game masters who need names, fast, at the table
  • Skyrim and World of Warcraft fans
  • Fantasy writers and worldbuilders
  • People looking for a Christmas elf or Elf on the Shelf name

What's the story behind your product?

ElfNames.wiki's answer:

Elf Names Wiki is an independent, fan-made project built by a solo developer and online since March 2026.

The idea behind it is simple: an elf name should fit the culture it comes from, and you should know what it means and how to pronounce it. So the site pairs a generator that follows the naming rules of each subrace with hand-written name lists and guides to how names work in D&D, The Lord of the Rings and The Elder Scrolls.

The name lists turned out to be what most visitors come for, so they keep growing — 1,278 names so far.

The site is not affiliated with or endorsed by Wizards of the Coast, Middle-earth Enterprises, Bethesda Softworks or Blizzard Entertainment.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

ElfNames.wiki's answer:

  • Next.js (static export), React and TypeScript
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Cloudflare Pages and Pages Functions for hosting and the API
  • Cloudflare D1 (database) and R2 (image and audio storage)
  • better-auth for sign-in
  • Creem for checkout
  • Google Gemini for name generation; fal.ai models for character portraits and voice pronunciation
